Have Herefords taken over?

Naw, it's just their 15 minutes of fame. This too shall pass. Anyway, the history of Hereford to some degree is the history of the beef biz since they were so dominant at one time.

It is sure about time!! Mike and I were beginning to think that we would be raising them for the zoos so that the rest of the world would at least be able to see what a Hereford looked like:)

We have been real fortunate on this board to have assembled a group of breeders who enjoy the breed and it's history. I am most pleased to read all the Hereford related posts. This is now my top spot for morning coffee reading.

Very well expressed. Maybe I should buy some myself.

Herefords have several things going for them right now.

1. Lots of black cows around could use a baldy calf.

2. Tiger stripes.

3. Lowest breed numbers in years.

3. Have been culled down enough lately to leave the still standing in good shape.

4. The pendulum has swung too far one way and WILL return.

I would be foolish to say that Herefords have taken over right now as the blacks vastly dominant. However there are lots of signs of renewed interest in the breed.

My sons' father-in-law who owns a feed and livestock supply store has said that all the small breeders that he has heard about have had a very hard time selling their bulls and that most of them are left unsold.
On the other hand he said that all of the Hereford bulls had sold very quickly.

I have noticed that the larger Angus breeders with good programs have not experienced this but only the small herds that really don't have a program. This is a natural phenomenon and the smaller breeders who might not have as good a breeding and merchandising program will be culled along with their cattle. Thus by getting rid of them the breed will be improved. The same thing has happened to the Herefords in the past and it has lowered their numbers and raised their overall quality for a breed. Watch it in your own herd. If you want to build your black numbers then you will allow more lower quality blacks in but only the extreme best of the Herefords will stay. You know what happens with that for very long.

One year at the banquet the night before the annual consignment bull sale in Kamloops BC at the time for the speeches the breeders gave one breeder a big sharp knife as a presentation. Great laugh but I think everyone got the point.

I forgot to mention last night is that another thing that Herefords have going for them right now is the market for good Hereford females. For the last four or five years and maybe longer the price/pound for these heifers has exceeded the price of their steer mates. There is a fantastic amount of interest in them over the last year.

Hereford's havent taking over but they are a key ingredient in today's cattle industry. They bring out their best quailities when crossed like many other breeds, they are good for todays market.

Wish that were true around here. There is one ranch down the road (W4 Ranch) that has a good high quality herd of herefords but the rest are nothing but junk...poor quality cattle to begin with and steadily breeding them worse.

hereford and angus both have plenty to offer, they were doing it years ago.. when cattlemen realized their attributes long before CAB personally i get a kick out of all the angus and hereford bashing... heres too great animals that compliment each other, in a F1 that has no equal.. in my humble but accurate opinion :cowboy:

It;s kind of funny that the pure Herefords stay about a BCS of 5.5-6 and the F1 Hereford Red Angus tend towards being off the scale as to being fat as toads. If there was a higher number then 9 they would be well above that.
