Hat problem

:mad: :mad: Today was not a good day for me.
I went out early and mixed remedy and deisel fuel in the sprayer that sits on the back of the 4wheeler,and started spraying mesquite. Got several sprayed by noon and started back to the house to eat.
Stuck the wand in the rack of the 4wheeler.
On the way to the house it fell off and I ran over it,which pulled the rubber hose from the wand.
And of course I didn't have the switch turned off.I got a real soaking of deisel fuel and remedy.

Now I can deal with that just took a shower and changed clothes.
But what really really p**me off I ruined my hat. :mad: :mad: I had it about 4yrs now and just getting it broke in. Been run over with a disk,a tractor,several times been trampled by cattle,and even had a little cow crap on it. It was just getting to fit real good and now i'm gonna have to throw it away cause I cant stand the smell of the deisel fuel.

Rekon my 2 months of batching is gonna be like this? I certainly hope not.

Cal...lay the hat in the back yard...go outside and pee on it a few times....should smell right and be wearable by Monday. :lol2:
 
Wearing that diesel soaked hat should keep the bugs away from your face and ears!
 
Hey don't throw that hat away here is a solution for you, ask your other half to give it a go it may work, as it used to on my sons hats that got messed up with diesel
1/2 cup baking soda dissolved in hot water then added to wash cycle or use Boraxo laundry aid.
it's hard to get a hat to that nice stage. have a go no harm done.

Put it in the dish washer on a bowl. Good hats need a cleaning when they get a little ripe and still have years left on them.

I sure hope not, but it ain't a good sign!! :D
 
So the sweat, mud, poop and gawd knows what else didn't bother you, but the fuel does...

Just go back to the feed store and get another hat. :D

I have another hat but now i'm gonna have to break it in,and it took about 4yrs to break in the other one.

I do appreciate everyone's sugestions but I think some of you are confused. It was a hat not a baseball cap.

If it makes you feel any better Cal, I have a sprayer like you are talking about mounted on the back of my lawn mower and at least once a year I run over that wand and hose and cut it up. It always makes me mad too, then a trip to TSC.

I haven't seen nothing but baseball caps around these parts for a while.

Try soaking it in a strong solution of Dawn dishwashing soap for a few hours. After that, rinse it good and soak it in a strong solution of liquid lysol. That should do the trick.
 
Well since you do have another hat, the best way to break them in (which I found out by accident) is to throw them into a hay tedder.

That old hat of mine has been through some rough times and I sure hate to toss it.Old feller told me today to just hang it out in this hot old texas sun everyday and bring it in of a night and the smell would leave in about a week. Said he had a skunk to spray his real good and by doing that he got rid of the smell.Told me not to throw it away,said ya just aint doin it right if ya can't get at least 10 yrs out of a good hat.Worth a try anyhow.

And by the way I didn't have an eagle feather in it but it does have a rattlesnake skin hatband and I had a tail feather from old Gentelman Jim,my old barnyard rooster that finally died of old age.

Anyhow we'll see what happens in a week.

See, that's what I'm talking about. You just can't buy that kind of hat right off the shelf. It takes time to make a hat your own. Hope airing it out works for you. Sounds like it's worth a try.
 
Sorry about your hat Cal, I agree with you n the smell of diesal fuel. After driving truck in the mine for 5 years I got to the point where the smell of diesal made me gag.
Did yu consider taking it in and having it cleaned. You'd have to start over on the breakin but you wouldn't have to buy a new hat.
When my Grandpa died I got his old ranch hat complete with blood, shyt, dehorning paste and everything else. Eventually it got to stinkin so bad I had to have it cleaned , came out good as new now it's broke in my way and I still have it 30 years later.
 
UPDATE!
Great news,i'm back to wearing my old hat again.
By hanging it out in the sun everyday i've gotten rid of all the old deisel fuel smell and other smells too.
I'm sure glad I was able to save that old hat,been a shame to throw it away after all those years getting it broke in.
