Dear Hereford Breeders and friends,

Since this past October, a cowherd that I have been studying in Canada a lot is Harvie Ranching. Now, what are some of your alls comments on this cowherd? First of all, do you all like the cowherd? Canadian Hereford breeders especially, do you all know the Harvie family? The sound to be some great people and they really do have a good program going. There right down the road from Remitalls, but I have never been there before. I was at Remitalls last 2006, but not this past year.

Anyways, just would like some comments that is all. Thanks!

I have been to Harvies a couple of times. They are nice people. But the brains of the outfit is Jill. They would be wise to take her advise. You may also want to keep a close watch on there new herd sires Traveler and Stamina. Traver was Reserve grad at both Edmonton and Regina but I think Stamina is by far the better bull. Both will be in Denver you be the Judge

I have heard a lot about Stamina, but I have been told his mother never milked very well, so I would want to stay away from that cow line. The Traveler bull, darn good bull, thick and I think he is the better bull, because only this reason, his dam is a better cow than Staminas and I think that you will get along better with Traveler on calving ease than Stamina. Stamina's dam weighed 130lbs at birth, so that is pretty big I think. But, Canadians grow some big ones. I really do like Harvies cowherd and crossing it with Remitall Genetics, well you only get better and better with time.

If Stamina is entered in Denver, I bet you that he will win the whole show hands down, because he is super thick and very impressive.

Do you KNOW his mother never milked very well?

Unless Stamina is ET, I would say she has ample milk....

Yes Stamina is a ET calf. Funny thing is I wonder why Copper Creek would buy her if she didn't milk. If there ia downfall to Traveler it would be because he does not have enough thickness. However you be the Judge they are both entered at Denver.

Rod at Guilford Farms told me about Stamina's dam not being a big time milking cow, but that she was very thick and showed well. I don't know, rumors do start about bulls. I have never seen the cow in production, but I had a chance to flush her at one time and I was going to flush her to World Class to keep the BW down and Doug Simons wanted $10,000/flush, I was a little worried about the price, I mean yes that is nice that he offered me a flush on her, but not for $10,000, maybe $5000, but never $10,000.

Stamina is a good bull though, I can't wait to give him a try for myself. Traveler looked a bit flat muscled in his picture, but it looks like he showed well and sold for a heck of a pile of money. Also, Haroldson's Anchor 236G 4T, sired by Governor and out of the Mira cow of Haroldson's, he looked like a really good bull.

To my knowledge Stamina semen will be availible in 2008. I am pretty sure semen has qualified for export.
Oh I would say it is, since Grandview Plantation, TRM, and I think Beck-Powell all bought into the bull.

Beck-Powell

Beck-Powell, I have heard a lot about them recently and seen their names tied into some bigger named bulls. We tried to get over to their sale on Nov. 4, but we were busy (mostly with the Colts game on) and didn't make it. Did anyone else go? How'd the cattle look? HerfNet has the avg as being $3,295 per head, so must not have been too bad.

I was at the Hoosier Beef Congress for the Livestock Judging Contest this past Saturday, and was looking through the Hereford Sale lineup. There was a couple sired by CSF MSU WF Ransom 115R that were really stout I thought, but I wasn't all too impressed by the Sonora steer, but I believe he was a bit green and squeezed in by two others, so I didn't really get a good look. I don't believe he had pigment either.

FWIW, just thought I'd share.

Beck-Powell usually has a pretty good group of cattle for sale each November. Andy Beck and the Becks do raise some good cattle, but they are stuck on Star Lake Genetics, something I am not to much interested in. But, also, Becks have interest in Sonora from the Grandview cowherd with owning in on the Sonora group. Sonora is not my favorite bull in the world, on he is sired by Online and two he is very short. I think his shortness comes from his dams side, Beth. Also, he is scurred and that is another characterisitic I don't like about the bull. Impressive EPDs, but I don't think the numbers match up well with Sonora. I wouldn't be scared to use Sonora on heifers.

Beck-Powell also owns some bulls with Crittenden Bros and I think Haroldson's.

Sonora's little sister brought 27,000 in the past Grandview sale. Rumor on the street is that there is a May heifer nursing beth at the present time that is her best to date.
