Went out to check cows this morning and found a dead 4 yr old full blood Pied. She was fine yesterday and showed no signs of even being close. She actually was about 5 weeks from her supposed due date according to the vet. She was laying on her side and had what looked like glue coming out her back end. Pretty sad deal. She was born and raised here. This would have been her 3rd baby. I just hate that I wasn't there to help her. Man I sure did like her a lot.
 
We had an 8 year old that was the first heifer born that we retained on this farm. Really liked her and she raised a great calf, our previous bull was out of her. Some folks last spring came up to buy a couple of cows and they ended up buying all of the registered cows on the place. She was one of them and had a dandy heifer calf at side. I told them originally that those 2 weren;t for sale but they talked me into it and promised they would take really good care of her. I din;t hear from them for a couple of months so I called to see how the girls were working out. The woman was almost in tears because a week after they bought them the cow got struck by lightning and killed. Short story made too long, but I know how you feel!
 
Yea I know you're not supposed to get attached to em but sometimes I sure do. I just hate it when it seems as if it could have been avoided. They work for us out n all kinds of weather and it's hard not to really appreciate that and become attached. No problems at all with her first 2 bull calves. I don't really know what went wrong. This bull always throws little baby's too.maybe it was backwards.

Yea, but they get very sick first usually. I've personally never seen it happen suddenly where they seemed fine then dead.
 
No sign of sickness at all and I was just admiring her yesterday thinking what a nice build she had and great udder.
 
So sorry for your loss. My friend had several of these "sudden death" cows in late pregnancy. It turned out to be Anaplasmosis. The cows looked normal and healthy, but went to miscarriage, but could not dilate. So they would die trying to abort. Just a thought.....
