I have been clearing fencelines on a 60 acre piece getting it ready for cattle. One fence line borders some woods. I had cleared out a 6 foot wide path with the bush hog back about 30 feet into the woods. I had pulled the tractor out and walked back in to chop down a grape vine when I heard my Dad yell from out in the field. He yelled "watch out"! About that time a small buck deer ran from the field where my Dad was straight into the 6 foot gap where I was working. He was running too fast to stop and I am too fat to move quick. Needless to say there was a collision. Luckily I was able to push off his chest to the side and all he did was knock me down. I got even because I knoked him over too. He was much faster at getting back on his feet than I

I had my back turned to the opening in the treeline until my Dad shouted the warning. If he had hit me unexpected like it might have really hurt me. All I got was a bruise where I landed on a sapling stobb where I had cut it down with a chain saw. I will get my revenge come deer season though :cboy:

you probably tried to run over him with a disc bine when he was a fawn  ...he remembered you...got some revenge ;-)

I've never been ran over by a deer yet...once had a deer run into my pickup though...I was used to running into them...I guess they wanted to run into me instead for a change

Man you wanna talk about deer. I have this awesome little Alfalfa field, it's only about four acres right next to the house, with some other assorted varieties to "attract" wild game   :D :D I only mow it once a year and I hit three deer in this thing within fifeteen minutes. I hunt and all the rest but, why in the world don't the run when the grass starts fallin' all around 'em any other time the run like wanna be immigrants getting chased by the border patrol. Anybody have explanation for this? It kind of makes me sick that they just lay there and a lot of times the poor things get their legs cut off, I had my wife bring a gun down to put one out in that field. I guess I'll have to start carrying a pistol on the tractor.

Herefordcross, were the deer that you are talking about in your hay field young fawns? That would explain why they did not move away from your tractor. Fawns are born with very little natural smell as a defense from predators. The doe will leave them along hidden in the grass and will only come to them a couple times a day for feeding. This way her smell is less likely to be on the fawn as strong and coyotes and such have less chance to find them. They instictively know to lay still and most predators will pass them by. They probably thought that your tractor was a predator and just laid still. When they get older and stronger they will run just like an older deer.
