Guernsey

~

I guess no one here has one.
Surprising.

You probably have already checked with your local dairyfarms, County 4H Clubs, FFA, small cheese producers, communes, Large animal vets, cattle dealers/transporters, etc.

Check with your A I rep. They always know who has what especially if they are ordering semen.

I asked mine who had Longhorns and Beefmaster in New England and he immediately gave me good info complete with phone numbers and addresses.

I don't know when the county fairs are in your neck of the woods, but thats another opportune time to scope out what everyone has and whats for sale.

Good Luck to you.

Let me know what you find.

I had Dairy cows for 45 years, I could probably count on one hand how many Guernsey cows I ever had. When I was a kid Golden Guernsey milk was considered the best. I guess they couldn't compete in stressed conditions. They make good family cows. Most are docile and easy to milk by hand.

A friend of mine has a Guernsey. I go to his house regularly for coffee. That cream makes the best coffee. He has two calves on her that are fat as ticks and she still has plenty for the family.

Never have milked a Guernsey, only Holsteins. Dairy about 6 miles from here has a herd of them though. Don't know much about him besides that he hosted the county dairy breakfast a couple of years ago.

We have a 1/2 Guernsey off of a 1/2 Hereford 1/2 Holstein cow. We could milk the Holstein granddam and crossbred dam no problem, but the Guernsey bull really tightened up the udder and shortened the teats by about a good inch and a 1/2. Very hard to milk, but when we do milk her, the end product is great...Guernsey Gold. Very docile and easy to handle. She has a Simmental-sired calf on her right now that is doing fantastic and is as fat as can be. Not too many breeders in the US or Canada. Shame really.

We run guernseys, granted we have a small 60 head dairy. About half are stright guernsey and half are crossed with jersey.

We used to have a number of guernseys when I was a kid - I used to bring them to the fairs.

I went to the fairs this year and didn't see a single guernsey anywhere! I'd like to find some and buy a couple.

We did notice that they weren't as hardy as the holsteins and jerseys up here in the northeast.
