Well...another recall! Cargill is recalling 1 million pounds of ground beef. These recalls continue at an astonishing pace. Is it better reporting (I don't think so)?

Beginning to think that there are 3 possibilities for finding more E. Coli contamination in ground beef:

  • 1. Better and more thorough inspections by USDA & FDA (finding more cases of contamination).
    2. Problems with plant sanitation & worker competency.
    3. Agricultural terrorism activities (we know there are MANY terrorist cells in operation, including women and "good ole USA citizens).

At the consumer end, people still don't get the basic, bottomline message: "Cook any ground beef until WELL DONE!"
Same applies to poultry and fish.

On the positive side:

Would seem to be more of a market for the smaller processors (supposedly more in control of operations) to process and market their beef to regular and nitch markets.

Went and ate some burgers with a buddy of mine, and he ordered his medium. I explained the basics of e-coli and ground beef and what not. Told him always eat ground beef well done, that way there is no chance of e-coli. His response "I dont care, I've never gotten sick eating this way before". I just don't understand some people.

Have a friend that always orders his burgers/chopped steaks rare. There's not a restaurant around that will serve it to him that way. He always asks why and gets the e-coli speech. Had a waitress once to ask him, "Do I have lawsuit tattooed on my forehead or something?"

Yep...some people just don't get it...lol. Guess it's a "taste" thing!

That's what A-I, ketchup, mustard, onions, seasoned salt, and anything else is for...give the SAFE well-done ground beef some "taste"...lol.

Many years ago as a freshman at Texas Tech I had a part-time late shift counter/cook job at a "Toddle House" in Lubbock. Some guy about 2 sheets to the wind came in and ordered a Raw Hamburger with only a slice of onion on it. I wouldn't do it. The Manager said to "serve the customer". Guess that was before E. Coli was invented...ROFLOL!!

I couldn't watch the Vampire eat the burger...

I ate raw beef once in Germany during a port visit while in the Navy. Very fancy place that specialized in it. As obsessive as the Germans are about everything, I didn't feel it was too much of a risk.

Sadly, there is a trend among some dog owners to feed their dogs raw meat. They just don't think about it or they would realize how ridiculous it is. They say, "wolves eat raw meat". Wolves also have shorter lifespans in the wild and are typically infested with parasites. Also, our dogs have become so inbred that I doubt they even have any genes to cope with a 'wild' diet. Heck, we probably have more 'wild' genes than dogs and we can't get away with it!

When things are concocted in million pound batches, a tiny screw up is pretty costly. A lot of animals killed for nothing. What do they do with it?

I advise people first to buy from a small local grower and if they have to buy from a supermarket to at least have roasts ground there. Never buy bulk ground beef. blech.

Yes indeed.. with all the recalls it's going to increase the number of small producers that can find a market. Most people are going to trust someone down the road more than a "big" producer.

medium rare please :) quit smoking 13 years ago , so I figure one thing at a time. What percentage of people get E-coli on a average day anyway?? I think more people get hit by cars or are people making the stories bigger than they really are,I don't here much of it this way.

Medium rare for me, too. I think the large number of recalls is mostly due to companies being scared of getting their a$$es sued off. Get rich the American way--sue somebody !

steaks MR and ground beef well done
The raw ground beef from the fancy restraunt is called Steak Tartar. It is usually ground and used the same day from fresh steaks or good quality roasts and spiced up with spices, diced onion and such.
Made it in the hotel I used to work at. Only rarely though because it was an expensive dish
