Last night this piece aired on RFD-TV about the bull Earl Marshall. Of the 3.1 million Angus cattle registered in the last 10 years ALL but 964 head trace back to him. Pretty amazing considering that in the early 1900s there wasn't A.I.

Red Angus - Choctaw Chief

Polled Hereford - MRF Vic Domino A14
Foundation sire of the RWJ Victor Domino herd

The interesting tidbit is that of the last 3.1 million head of Angus cattle registered, that only 964 didn't trace back to Earl Marshall...

Which makes you wonder how many red angus, black gelbvieh, simmentals, limousins-- and several other breeds don't eventually trace back to the bull also... :???:

HOLY COW!

thats only 3.1 registered not counting the billions that aren't reg. so not all angus go back to him

also it means lots of inbred registered cattle...just saying

The statement that of the last 3.1 million Angus registered only 964 are NOT related to the Earl Marshall bull is amazing.

However to put it in perspective, is there a foundation Hereford bull that would show similar high percentage if traced back such as Anxiety the 4th or another?

All Thoroughbred horses trace to one of three Arabs stallions

and since only one line has the big heart gene, the other two will fade away.

would be interesting which line has the bleeder gene if there is one or if it's related to the big heart gene. ie, are there bleeders that don't have the big heart gene?

should the big heart gene be considered a defect (it is) and eliminated from the breed?
