Thoroughly enjoyed the WSU Extension Women in Ag conference today, which happened in 21 different venues in Washington. The emphasis was on financial planning/record keeping for farming operations and marketing strategies. Attendees were beef producers, cheese makers (goat and sheep cheeses), dairy cattle and dairy goat operation, egg and meat chicken operations, and a number of CSA and farmer's market produce folks. Lots of stories were shared about how these women became involved in ag, and why they stay. Now, guys, please don't take offense to this . . . . . but it was really nice to sit down with a bunch of women -- some who have spouses or male business partners (either via blood family members or marriage), and some who wing it alone, and be able to discuss their operations and how they make it work with non-farm jobs that help support it, or with kids/school/extra-curricular activities, senior parent care, etc. -- without men in attendance who sometimes poo-poo what the wife has to say, or male peers in the smaller farm ag business that think women don't know anything even though those women are running it pretty much single-handedly. It was a good day, lots of shared knowledge, a live-feed presentation that went state-wide, breakfast and lunch, a copy of "Farmer Jane -- Women Changing the Way We Eat" ($15.99 retail) for a measly $25. WSU's Extension program is really good.
