Just looking for some help on what would be best to plant . I live in eastern Canada , looking to run stockers on what's planted . About the earliest I can plant is April 15 . Anyone plant oats with anything such as rye grass , peas or clover and have luck with a good gain . Not looking to harvest the field for anything as it will be plowed down in the fall . Need something to feed for summer along with pasture is all . Thanks for any help

Not my area, but I do know rye (cereal) is super tough once it gets growing and can take a lot of traffic and will re-grow if pastured/cut before it heads out. Peas would establish quickly too, but may not handle too much traffic far as re-growing. I wouldn't think clover would establish quick enough for much forage, but may be worthwhile for a nitrogen fixing cover crop for your next crop (depending what that will be). We have grazed some rye (cereal) grass, Was only for a couple weeks, before with the cows w/calves at side and they have done good on it. So, not sure if I helped, but I do know rye establishes quickly and is pretty tough. Good luck,
Jenna

turnips?
In my area turnips or oats/triticale are grazable 60 days after planting. I grew oats/ryegrass last year but autumn-sown for winter grazing, don't know how it would do as a summer crop. Turnips do well in summer, sown late spring.
