I spoke with a MN and a SD barn today. Sounds like lots of wet feed plus a few guys who sold their cows herds plus some unfounded optimism are all driving price. Anything green and under 700# is in demand.

I am fix'in to sell something! Just got to figure out what I can afford to buy back :?

Well people still enjoy eating beef including ground beef. The country’s herd population has dropped due to feed lots and packers buying at below cost of production. It has put people out of business, and the ones still in it are operating at a loss. It cannot continue forever, and people have never stopped eating beef. I have a few claves on the ground but I really need to keep all my heifers, and I am sure many producers are in the same boat as me. I will be selling less numbers this year.

With supply down prices have to go up if you want to eat beef.

Can you hold on for a while longer? Can you limit feed to your yearlings? The grasser price only gets better the longer you hold. By 1st of April, guys in your area should be nearly wrestling each other to bid on grassers.

95% of the guys I talk to that complain about the cow business and are looking to get out sometime this year, have said they will definitely be grasser buyers next year. "Gotta have something to keep the grass short".   The cow/calf/backgrounder golden days are right around the corner! Those are going to be some expensive lawnmowers. :D

I have gone to grass with heavies before and weighed enough of them to not like it. Steers do better than heifers and green is better than fleshy but it is expensive to get over 1.2# ADG for an extended period with a 700-800# animal.

Looking for some cutter bulls right now. Semi retired cattlemen don't like wrassl'in with the stinky ones :cowboy:
