With all of the talk on subsidies and welfare, I've got to thinking about the goverment owning huge tracts of land, in some cases over 50% of the state. My question is, what business do they have owning all of the ground if the goverment was setup to be run by the people for the people. It seems we are moving closer to the European style goverments where the people are subject to the goverment.

With every new politician you have a new person that has to justify their existance. They want to make a showing and be noticed. I am not sure that they consider future ramifications.
Also you have the winers, "there otta be a law" people that think the government should fix all their problems.

To many laws, to many lawyers, and way to many liars, oh, I ment to say politicians.

What sort of tracts of land? Which government, state, local, Feds?

"They" are you. If you don't like the way any government is run, vote or better yet, run for office and get things changed.

I did read that Fed., State, and local governments own around 50% of the land mass in the USA. Not too far fetched either considering all highways, parks, buildings, etc.

Bush made an attempt to sell at auction a portion of a national park here in Alabama a couple of years back. The environmental whackos went nuts.

His justification was that we are losing too many dollars on property taxes unpaid and that goverment owned land costs money to the taxpayers for upkeep.

We need to adopt a system that insures a food source that can be grown here in the USA instead of depending on other nations and the giant corporations. It would take a wheelbarrow full of gold to buy a loaf of bread if there were no bread to be had. JMHO

It is a bigger issue in the west. And the further west you go the more land the government owns. There are some areas like the county that Salmon, Idaho is in where 95% of the county is owned by the government. It gets down right impossible to do anything because you have to march to the feds tune. There have been attempts to change things (the sage brush rebellion) but they simply get out voted by those from back east and the environmentalists.

Look up the percentage of nevada that is publicly owned. All of the above.

Maybe this is the start of my campaign to systematically sell of the vast majority public lands in the west in order to help reduce our national debt load. We are broke, we need to restucture. Lets sell some assets and reduce goverment agencies that don't "produce" anything and have little purpose other than to harass, regulate and monitor its boss'.

We're spending $2Billion a WEEK in Iraq. Don't talk to me about selling Yellowstone National Park until that bleeding stops.

If ya be livin in a state what has property tax, ya own absolutely nothin anyway. State "owns" it all, ya pay rent (personal property tax) for the right ta use it (usually dictated by the state as ta what ya can do and what ya can't)

How much higher would your property taxes be if half of your state was owned by the government and not having taxes paid on it? Not only are no taxes being paid on that land, it is being managed (I use the term loosely) by a government agency that is being paid for by your tax dollars.

We aren't talking about Yellowstone Park here.

Can't be done Frankie. Your buddy "Bill" signed Yellowstone over to the U.N. as a "World Heritage" site along with 19 others.

I can't wait until we go into Iran, you folks are really gonna be screaming then..........

A link please. Show me where ANYONE legally signed Yellowstone National Park over to anyone else.

Now if you're talking about this:

"One hundred years later, during the Nixon administration, the United States proposed the World Heritage Convention to the international community and was the first nation to ratify it. The World Heritage Convention, the most widely accepted international conservation treaty in human history, is the American national park idea being carried out worldwide."

I don't believe we're going into Iran. We don't have the resources. We are going to be stretched in trying to stop the Taliban in Afghanistan this spring. Besides, just as the Iraq Study Group recommended last year, Iran and Syria have been invited to talks in Iraq. Plus we're now involved in one on one talks with North Korea. They seem to be working, too. Diplomacy: what a concept! Too bad it wasn't done several years ago. I guess the Axis of Evil has reformed.

Frankie, the only diplomacy that Iran, Syria, and N Korea will ever listen to is NUKE their BUTT

We have to fight wars politically correct these days and I personally am sick of it. This started in the 50's in Korea and got worse when I was in Vietnam.

The only way to deal with a BULLY is smack him in the nose and be done with it.

Lunatic dictators only change names with the new generations, and we live in times that will never stand up and stop the vicious circle.

JMO and don't get me started

Beef, I didn't mean to hijack the post, some things just hit a nerve with me.

"The World Heritage Convention of 1972 granted special powers to the corrupt UN agency called UNESCO to designate selected American treasures as World Heritage sites and develop regulations and policies concerning their use. The United States doesn't even belong to UNESCO because Ronald Reagan pulled us out of it. Nevertheless, 20 World Heritage Sites have already been claimed and marked by UNESCO, including Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and even the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor and Independence Hall in Philadelphia."

Ronald Reagan realized the World Heritage Convention had other intentions than was revealed to Nixon.

Clinton actually used the World Heritage Laws to shut down an independently owned coal mine next to Yellowstone citing it would be dangerous to mine coal next to the park.

I say let's go to Iran. I hear they taste like chicken.

Iran: I had just as soon not go there. lets just nuke em till they behave. We sure need to nuke them before they nuke us and nuke us they will if they ever get a chance. We would only have to nuke one country. The rest will see it and be belivers.
I say lets make belivers out them folks and get this crap over with.
