Got my soil sample back

Test recommends a little nitrogen and some potash. What part can we help you interpret?

The pot ash part. How much is it calling for per acre? I'm thinking I'm going to split it into two applications. One now and one maybe in June or so. The co op of course says to use their mixture at 200lbs per acre. I may do that but would rather split into two applications.

You need 83 pounds/units (same thing) of potash per acre. I would put out half now and half in about 3 months because like nitrogen, it will leach and you will lose some.

Yes. It looks real good. My samples have a good PH but call for WAY more fertilizer than yours. Your fertilizer bill won't be too bad!

No it will be under $900 for it all. I've been using litter the last 3 years and I feel like that has helped. My first year I sampled it called for a boat load of commercial. I think it's getting itself under control now.

I'm not positive it's the same where you are but I'm pretty sure chicken litter is chicken litter. Here it helps tremendously with the phosphorus levels and with the PH. It also adds organic matter. We can only use it for about 3-5 years and then we have to swap to commercial for a while. They are learning how to charge for it also. Gotten up to around $100/ac for 2 tons/acre spread. I plan to use a good bit next year. The neighbors don't particularly like it :hide:

Took me 2 years to get rid of the weeds that we brought in the one time we used chicken litter. It was some weird variety of spurge.

I'm in north Alabama. I don't know the first thing about chicken litter honestly. Not even sure if it's broiler house litter or what. I've just always heard it helps build your soil up quicker and has a longer effect than commercial. My first sample I did 3 years ago was not pretty to look at. Just about everything in the page was low. I can get two big truckloads spread for 1500. I'm hoping I can still get litter yearly but won't use it every year due to price. Commercial is cheaper for me for sure. I've never had an issue with weeds with litter. Heard plenty of people mention it but I've got minimal weeds overall, granted I've sprayed grazon every other year so far.

Your Phosphorus levels look to be off the charts on the high side. I remember hearing about the possible downside to too much chicken litter is way high phosphorous levels if used too much. I don't know if there is any negative effect from too much Phosphorous or not.

Here it hurts the ph and you have to use more lime. Our extension recomends using it every other year. I think they say 2 out of 3 but prefer every other. Haven't found the organic matter benifit all that much but great for trace minerals.

Ten years ago they gave it away if you'd pay freight but those days are gone. I am thinking my price was pretty close to $100 an acre last spring also.
