I went to give a man an estimate this evening on french drains retaining walls and 1 zone of irrigation I told him he's looking at 11,500-12,500 he told me he's only paying that kind of $ if he's putting someone in the ground then asked could I do it for 5,000. Well I was thinking about his comment and wondered when I die do I want that kind of $ spent on putting me in the ground I am think cremationay be what I want. I guess my question for everyone is which do you want burial or cremation and why?

I'm hoping to have a couple more years before I really have to worry about that, but I think diggin a hole with a backhoe on the back 40 would please me plenty... ought to be able to hire a backhoe, including transport for about $500... figure I don't need to get burnt, I'm going to be facing enough fire as it stands :)

This makes me think of "Please don't bury me" by John Prine

I think big ugly (*cough*... Expensive) caskets for people who lived modestly is an insult to the person who'd getting put in it

Cremation for me. Thats cheaper. Don't really care what they do with my ashes either, I don't need to be laying around or spread any place special. It's just a body that my soul borrowed for awhile! ;-)

I've given instructions. I just want to be removed from my place of death and taken away to be hygienically disposed of. I am not having any service. I don't want to be lying out the front of a chapel and having people telling lies about how I was such a good bloke.

cremation for me....used to say I wanted my ashes mixed into fifty lbs of cattle mineral but since I only have three cows now I don't want to poison em....probably want em spread over the horses graves....

no ceremony or funeral for me.....I wanna try to sneak into heaven befor the devil knows I am dead....and I doubt St Peter will let me in the front gate....

someone sent me a facebook thread this week of what would your fneral song be....I thought a while and finally decided that mine would be Keep on Smiling by Wet Willie.....

just went to a funeral yesterday so have thought some on it lately....

Sky, I buried my Mother a couple of years ago and it cost me $7500.00, cheap by standards in a big city. Our family has plots (free) and my Mother did not want services at the funeral home - grave side only. Price included casket, preparation, delivery to the grave site, and opening and closing of the grave. Did not include music, preacher, funeral home, sheriff escort or any other add on. Same features in Houston would be over $12,000.00 (Mother-In-Law's funeral cost $13,000.00)

Don't know about cremation but I understand it is significantly cheaper. You can rent a casket for viewing and use a cardboard box for cremation.

As my niece laughed and told her mom a few weeks ago before her mom passed away.."Mom you'll be gone and I get to sign the check. I'll do it the way I want it".

My wife and I were talking about this the other day. I feel like having visitation is an insult to the deceased. Most funerals I've been to in my short life consisted of people standing around shooting the bull while the family mourned. Seems most use it as a social gathering and catching up with neighbors they never talk to any other time.

I disagree about it being an insult to the deceased because everyones life consists of family and friends and for people to take time out their day to atleast go is supportive to the family no matter what discussions you have. It brings friends and family together whats more important than family and friends ? I would feel more insulted had NO ONE showed up.

I don't care how cheap the casket or the plot is but what I do want is a head stone that sticks up above the ground high enough that the guy with the riding lawn mower has to go around. I have been getting in peoples way all my life why stop just because I died?
Seriously my Mom's grave has one of those flat markers. Every time I go up there I have to search to find the grave and then clean the grass clipping off.

When I'm gone, I'm gone for ever. I do not want my wife to spend money she may need for her living expenses on a funeral for me. I did not have much of a life until I married her and no one will miss me much.

To bad you're not a neighbor. I happen to know a guy...... :-)

I actually have my own backhoe... If I start feeling too bad, I'll fire it up myself.. backfilling will be up to someone else though.

As for services, I hate "official" stuff.. you want to remember me, have one person phone the next guy I knew, and have a drink at the bar, play some pool, and talk about cars, trucks, and cattle and the stupid crap I've done..
