Got it done early

Opening gun day... 20+ does come wondering across my pasture, about 150 yards away.. with one nice 8 point buck trailing them. They disappeared into some dead johnson grass , and then about 20 mins later .. the buck showed up in a clearing. BAM! shot him and he ran over to my neighbors fence, jumped it and rain into the woods. Most of the does cleared out except for about 5 or 6.. so I took aim on one.. took her down too.
It was getting close to dark, so I got down out of my stand, made sure the doe was not going anywhere, slit her throat, then crossed the fence to look for the buck. Found him about 40 yards from where he crossed the fence. drug all of his 142lb body back to the fence, and got him under it.
got both back to the house gutted, skinned and let em hang for 4 days, then started the butchering process.... Ended up with 30 freezer bags of deer hamburger, 10 bags of chops, 5 bags of stew meat. First time in my years of hunting I was finished on opening day.. was kinda nice

Congrats!!! I'm looking forward to muzzleloader season here. Saw several during gun season and harvested a doe. I'd like one more to fill the freezer.

Me too! Me and dad really like muzzleloader season, also now I guess we can use centerfire handguns, that may be fun.

I really hate getting mine on opening day (not that I would pass one up). I shot my elk on the tenth day I was in the hills. It was prefect timing because I was headed home that afternoon. If I had shot one the first day think of all the fun I would have missed. Things like the two days I stood on the ridge in a driving rain, socked in with clouds so I couldn't see a thing. Or the day I covered 24 miles on mountain bike and foot only to have some guy shoot one about 10 minutes before I go there. Do you seriously want to miss fun like that?

Finished on opening day? With 2 deer? Is that all yall can kill ? I would hate that cause Nov - Jan thats my everyday job is to hunt except sunday .. Its not legal here lol

Yep.. I have had alot of that kind of fun in my hunting days..
Skyhigh.. No, two deer is not all we can kill. That is just for gun season. Two is just what I prefer to kill for THIS year. Its all we need, becuz I butchered a steer a few months back, so we got plenty of meat for the upcoming year. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE to hunt, but seems like this year, I have too many other things going on that I need to do , like cutting more firewood, and helping my father-in-law build a new home. So, yeah, I was glad to get em both on opening day.

I always thought that the coffee was warmer, the scenery prettier, the bed softer and the breakfast tasted better after I tagged out. Plus being an expert in hunting, you get to tell everyone else what they are doing wrong. :lol2:

Its all we need, becuz I butchered a steer a few months back, so we got plenty of meat for the upcoming year. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE to hunt, but seems like this year, I have too many other things going on that I need to do , like cutting more firewood, and helping my father-in-law build a new home. So, yeah, I was glad to get em both on opening day.

I can understand that I typically kill quite a few but I donate the deer to churches and a program for people who need food so I keep going all year round here I can take 3 antlered deer and as many does as I want. I am not hunting this week I do have stuff I gotta do I am going with my wife to the mountains to check on the house we are having built there and I so badly want to take my rifle and hunt with my family but we gotta come back early tomorrow she has to work :yuck:

I certainly understand being an expert and all. But I know in my case the previous three elk got shot first thing in the morning opening day. I had all of elk season off work, someone lined up to do chores back at home, and I am hunting with one or more of my kids so I can't just pack up and go home. So I became chief cook and bottle washer...... that gets old when the glow of being a successful hunter wears off at about day 2. On the other hand hunting in a state where the success rate for elk hunters in about 10% or a little less, I see a legal bull, I fill my tag, I don't care which day it is. But I do prefer to get to spend some time hunting.
