Came home from work and one of the Herefords I bought in December was prolapsing. Vet came out. Stitched her back up. Said calf was definitely a big one. Not sure of her due date. Vet says she is 8 months plus but she has not bagged up yet. She has milk but not as much as he would like to induce her. Don't know the history of this cow. She may not be a "bagger" or a milker. Guess I will watch her progress and maybe induce her next weekend? What kind of window does one have with calves if they come early survivability wise?

sure hope u have better luck than i did with a 10 yr old that prolapsed.vet stitched her up and a few days later we induced labor but she would not dialate so vet did a c-section.well next day the cow died and now we got a bottle baby.he's doing great.

You have to be within two weeks of her due date to have any decent chance of success.

Is that one of the cows that you got in the State sale? I hope you get along good with her. It doesnt sound good but one can hope. I hate it that you are having any trouble from these cows. If there was even a chance that one would prolapse I would have sent her to the sale barn ( one way ticket to never return to the farm again) and not a sale. THIS IS WHAT RUINED PEOPLE ON HEREFORDS THE LAST TIME THEY WERE POPULAR.

I would really like to know the pedigree of the cow. You can P.M. me. I am not going to go saying anything but this type of problem should be reported to the person who sold the cows to you and to the state sale guys so they know to not put something like that in the sale again.

Don't know her due date. All I know is last year she calved Feb. 5 and pasture exposure started May 1.

A Hereford exposed May 1 could be due as early as Feb 7th so she could be due any day now. there is a gestation chart here:

Unfortunately you need a little more than a gestation table and the assumption that the cow bred back on schedule to make that decision.

If you can palpate, you could feel vaginally what the cervix feels like or even if it has started the dilation process, but that isn't for the novice.

yeah, the vet wanted to wait and check again in a week. If she got bred on her first cycle, that could up to May 21, second cycle 21 days after that. Hopefully she isn't any furter than that, especially the size of the calf the vet was talking about.
