Got a good deal today on a cattle feeder

How'd you find it? Word of mouth? Reason I ask, I recently stumbled on a good deal on a feeder thru talking to an elderly lady who directed me to a fella who had a goldmine of stuff he was willing to get rid of. I came home with a stainless steel feeder. I was tickled.

It was a Craigslist deal -- posted near Boise (7 hrs. away). Turns out the guy lives 2 miles from my youngest sister. He'll drop it at her place; we'll pick it up when we go over next month for a nephew's wedding. Just got lucky. Not a goldmine, though! Sounds like you got a good deal, too, Jo. I'm always looking . . . . . it's like fishing. They don't call it "catching."

Jo, is this one of the fringe benefits of adopting old people?

I've never done Craigslist. Always been kinda scared of that cause I don't really understand the ins and outs of it. Sounds like that worked out good though.

Ouachita, not this time. This was more from just taking the time to talk to an elderly person. She was interested in what I was doing and the conversation went from one thing to another and then she told me I really needed to meet her friend who used to do something similar and he could help me out. I guess the Ivey Leaguers would call this networking. :lol2: What's funny is in my youth my impatience kept me from finding deals like this cause I really couldn't justify buying a new one like this.

I just looked at Kathie's link to the feeder. I'm missing something. $1,160-$1,700. Does it massage the cattle too. Only 10 feet long? What am I missing? I'm having alot of trouble convincing myself that $350 for a brand NEW one is reasonable, for what I think I'm seeing
I also want to know how they got em' all lined up on one side of that feeder

The high cost of just about EVERYTHING Ouachita! Maybe trick photography with the cattle line-up . . . ??

Jo, there really aren't many ins and outs to Craigslist. It's free to post, pretty easy, and no fees. I've bought and sold and "wanted" on Craigs. I'd never try to sell anything like jewelry or similar -- the things I'm usually shopping for or getting rid of are not things most thugs would be interested in. (And we don't have a large population of strong-arm thugs in the area.) Never post a phone number or address. Any interested person can email me with THEIR contact information.

Price the steel. Then weld it & paint it.

Bet you have more than $350 in it, unless you do not put a $ value on your time.

I looked at the link again. It appears to be simple skid type trough design with slanted bars around it. Thats it. Thats all I see. What am I missing? What else does it do?

For the price of the new ones all I can see it helps do is take the profit out of the # of head it's feeding.

That's all it does, guys! You're not missing a thing. My step-son is very talented when it comes to design/fabrication/welding, HOWEVER, he's not particularly interested in the cattle and less interested in spending his time on our projects. Those of us not blessed with those talents are at the mercy of the commercial suppliers or we shop for pre-owned equipment.

Kathie I would keep searching. I think you can find one just as good for a lot less money. It really seems to be overpriced. JMO.

I most humbly disagree TB, there IS more to that feeder than the photo shows and if the bottom is sound with no rusted out areas then $350 is a pretty good buy on it. They weigh a ton and reduce waste.

My 2 cents.

It's in very good shape -- no rust and it still has the stickers on it. Seller is a high school ag instructor. And I'm already committed . . .

And if this is what you wanted, and had already resolved to pay $1,170 for a new one, then is a good deal for you :tiphat: . I just looked at it on PR's website. It is very well built, heavy, 420 lbs. I just cant believe that new price for just 10 foot of trough. I personally can't justify $350 (or $1,170) dollars per number of head that can fit around a 10 foot caged trough, but I am a tight wad ;-)
