I got one of those calls yesterday every parent dreads. Thank God it was my son calling rather than the coroner. He was alive but had flipped his ride three times after falling asleep at the wheel on his way to practice. I know things could have been worse but am happy to say he got out of the vehicle and is fine except a cut on his leg.

The good in this is that we had one of those talks Monday about how your life's decisions will affect you the rest of your life. How he will see some of his friends die or be maimed before he graduates high school and college. How he is not invinsible to these calamaties and it just doesn't happen to the other person - it can just as easily happen to you. It was a good conversation and I think he took it to heart as best as a sixteen year old can. Now, he understands EXACTLY what I was talking about and he is going to be healthy, and live to learn from this tragic lesson.

When I got to the crash site, I hugged him and told him not to worry about the vehicle. I was just glad he was alive and well. I told him that God has given him a second chance and now it was up to him to figure out what God wanted him to do.

He told me he was going to quit playing sports. I told him not to make any rash decisions for a few days. Told him he needed time to think things through and then make up his mind what he wanted from life. He is very active and has one of the highest GPA's in the school yet he still has time for two sports, FCA, Jr. Board, volunteering with elderly and helping his old man with the farm work. Had something happened to him ... well I just can't fathom it.

Jo - I'm incredibly happy for you that your son is OK.

Stuff can happen in a flash. Sometimes we scrape by and come out OK and sometimes we don't come out of it so well. I'm glad you and yours came out of this episode OK.

Hopefully he'll take this as a warning that he's not invincible but some people take a close scrape as a sign that they are bulletproof. Keep talking to him and hopefully he'll benefit from your experience and wisdom.

Glad the kid's OK. Maybe that scared the heck out of him.

Sure scares me to think back on how many times I could have bit the bullet, but was too stupid to realize it.

Joo,

Buddy I know how you felt when you got the call. You want to hear from the kids while they are out but you dread hearing the phone ring.

One Sunday night about 4 years ago when my youngest son was 16, we were coming out of church when he asked if he and 2 of his buddies could go bowling across town. I told him yes but to be home by 10pm. About 9:45pm he called from the cell phone to say that another car had run a redlight and they had a wreck but they were OK. He wanted to know if we could come pick them up. We jumped in the truck and headed the 20 minutes into and across town while calling the parents of the other to boys to let them know about the wreck and that they were OK.

As we approached the accident scene we were expecting to see my sons Jeep Grand Cherokee, another vehicle and maybe the police car. What we saw when we turned onto the block we were not prepared for. There was my sons Cherokee laying on it side with the front smashed and the roof caved in. The other car was about 100 feet away and had the driver's door smashed in about 1 1/2 feet. There were 3 police cars, 4 fire engines/rescue vehicles, 3 ambulances and two wreckers all setting around the wreck area with their emergency lights going. It looked like a diaster area. My wife who was up to this point concerned but relieved they were Ok, screamed and busted into tears.

We stopped the truck and ran up to my son who was standing at the back of the ambulance. After hugging him for what seemed like an eternity, we realized that they were loading on of his buddies in the ambulance. Apparently when the Cherokee rolled over, his buddy got a small cut on his forehead. We spent the next 4 hours in the Emergency room with the boy and his parents while we waited for his 3 stiches to close the cut.

We were lucky, our boys walked away with minor bumps, brusies and the one small cut. The other driver who was 19 wasn't so lucky, he had a broken pelvis and shoulder.

Like I said in the begining, when your kids are out driving, you want to hear from them but you hate hearing the phone ring.

Thanks GOD you son is OK. Maybe this will help him understand that it only takes a blink of an eye to be injured for life.

Joe, as a parent I been there. And as a driver I been there to.

I'm very happy your Son was not hurt badly in this accident.

It's a fact that this close call was a learning experience, and will help your Son to always while driving, focus on the road and traffic.

And your a understanding Dad, I think also a very important part of the learning process.

Glad your son is ok. Raising kids can sure be hard on your nerves. I've had similiar experiences with my teenage sons.

I am very glad your son is okay.

I'm here to tell you, though, the only thing worse than one of your kids calling to tell you that they flipped their car is when they call and tell you they rolled and totaled yours!

My youngest did that, she's okay, too. Blazer... leather seats... AC... paid off 3 months.

So glad he is okay. Looks like the front part of the vehicle held up real well. Is that a third row seat sticking out of the back side? Good thing he had a sturdy big vehicle.

Sounds like he might have too much on his plate. Kids need down time (but not too much!).

Jogeephus, sounds like you handled it well. Sure hope your son was listening. Past decisions determined our present situation and past as well as present decisions will determine our future. Not only for ourselves, but will also affect those around us.

Best to you and your son.

That is the third row of seats sticking out the back. I'm glad he didn't have the truck full. I bought this truck for my wife 11 years ago cause I had been told it was safe. Amazing thing to me is that even though it landed on roof two or three times, the glass in the moon roof didn't break. This helped keep him in the vehicle cause he didn't have his seatbelt on! He tumbled around inside it and ended up in the passenger seat.

Here is another view.

I think your right about him having two much on his plate. I have talked to him about that, matter of fact that was one thing we discussed Monday. He is however self-motivated and I told him he could do the two sports IF he kept his grades up. Cummulative average of 98 in advanced placement classes made it impossible for me to renig on the agreement even though I thought he was doing too much.

I appreciate your thoughts and well wishes. I haven't mentioned the wreck since the day. I think the wreck did all the talking for me. Maybe now he will see his old man is not as big of fuddy duddy as he previously thought. Kinda like the reason you will always find smart dogs at the dumpsters cause the dumb ones are lying flat on the asphalt.

Am looking for another vehicle for him to drive. Good God have you seen the prices these days!!!! Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thinking a mid-sized truck.

Been there and done that. My son wrecked his car when he slipped in the rain, hit a tree and was ejected through the driver's side window. Broke his leg and cut up his face. A stranger called me on my son's cell to let me know. They thought he had a brain injury but he got better pretty fast. It is the scariest think possible.

He's okay now, going to mortuary school. I hope he learned the value of his life and to appreciate it.

Your son is extremely lucky, no seatbelt, playing with fire there. We knew a kid just turned 18, just graduated, driving his truck home one night, on wet raods, went off the side, overcorrected, and flipped the truck. He was ejected, and the truck crushed him to death-very sad. I sure hope you impress it upon him to wear his seat belt from now on.

Glad he walked away. As for another vehicle, bigger the better, mid size truck would be good, or full size or I know this is a no no for a young kid, but a big ole boat of a car would be good too.

Thank God in heaven...there was an angel on that boy's shoulder, Jojee.

When my daughter was in H.S., I got more than one of those calls. I finally told her that my greatest fear was NOT that someone called telling me she was in jail, but that someone called saying she was...well, you understand.

I'm soooo glad that wonderful kid of your's is ok.

Joceephus,

Glad they are all ok from the wreck. I'm sure he learned a lesson, but he sounds like a great kid who has the world by the tail. He only needs to figure out which direction to go with it. Enjoy him as much as you can, while you can !

BTW, is that where those dark, dark circles under your eyes came from ?? Or was that the cows ?
