I wanted a milk cow for that too. Hubby said now way as the calves would destroy her bag. Rats.

Only trouble we have had with her bag was 1 case of mastisis in 1 quarter. Thought she was getting it again and tested her. Came up negative.
calves keep her milked out pretty good during the day. I cut her calf off at night and leave the bum with her. Then milk her during her morning feeding. Been getting 2+ gallons a day.
Her calf is getting a scoop of pellets at night too.

thats a cute pic an she is doing a good job raising those calves.an she is a heavy milker giving 2 gal in the mornings.

Cut both calves off last night. Milked her this morning. Got 3 gallons out of her and I had left some for the calves. Milked her til her bag was pretty soft.
Need to pour her for external parasites. Only thing I have found is Brute pour on. Going to treat all 3 of them.
Hopefully in a week I can kick them out in the little pasture next to the house. Her calf was reaching under the fence this morning trying to get the green grass. I just want the grass up better before they go out.

Good Jerseys are expensive around here. I just left the dairy sale in Sulphur Springs and any young-wet cows they had were 1500+. Before the sale I went back in the pens to find me a good gentle nurse cow. The Jersey I had my eye on brought $1875.

I know a gal up here who bred all her heifers(about 30) to a Jersey bull last year she has probably 12 or 15 pretty nice heifers. Is there any point in trying to market them for nurse cows. They ain't worth squat around here and the steers are more worthless.

I paid $1800 for her last fall and caught heck for paying that much, but they are not easy to find up here.
Have had 3 different people ask me about buying that heifer calf. Daughter claimed her first though.
Bought 6 straws of Jersey semen to AI her with.
Was listening to this radio station that has this deal called Tradio where people call in with what they are selling or looking for and 1 lady was looking for a Jersey milk cow.

Heck around here by the time you get em to springing you would have 750 dollars worth of feed in them. Not sure it makes much sense to raise em. Course if they were bred back Jersey they would maybe bring more.
