I have a 16" Craftsman chainsaw in the $150 range, and the darn thing doesn't run right. It dies all the time while using it, and it's often difficult to get started back. I won a craftsman a few years ago, and it didn't run right. I can't remember what happened, but I destroyed it somehow, so I bought another just like it thinking the poor running was just that particular saw, but the new one does the same thing. We've tried to adjust, and we've taken it to the dealer to adjust, and it does the same thing.

So, what brand do you guys recommend, and what price range should I get. Cheaper is good, but if I need to pay more to get a good one, it will be worth it. Keep in mind, I'm not a logger using it everyday for heavy duty work, it's just for odd and end jobs.

My family has always ran Stihl saws with very good success. Seems I see more Stihl's than anything around my area as well.

I own a tree service business there will be no other saws I own other than a Stihl... I started off with homelite-Poulan pro's till I could afford higher quality saws then bought Husky and stihl... Husky couldn't out perform the stihls so I bought all stihls. If you really want a good saw combo buy a Stihl saw and put a Husky chain on it . Then you got yourself a cutting SOB.

Hero - While I understand not everyone can afford same things as others buying a cheap saw is what made you create this post. If its a tool I plan on using and do not want issues I will spend extra money on it and or save till I can afford to buy one. Whether I use it once a year or daily I want something dependable and reliable when I pull the cord. When I am ready to work my tools need to be as well. I dont want to throw my money away on some cheap arse tool that works half arse... A cheap tool will cost you more than an expensive one in the long run. I buy harbor freight wrenches for my guys work trucks so if they lose them no big deal but other than that I like good tools.

It seems like Stihl has it so far. I probably need a 16" blade. What price range do you suggest?

I run Stihls only. An 028 on the truck for fence work and an 026 and a 362 for wood cutting. There are those who like Husqy / Jonsered .Whatever saw you buy, get it from a dealer near you with parts and service and never leave ethanol mixed fuel in it.Better yet, use Southern States or other ethenol-free gas in your mix.Ethanol gas is a shop's best friend.

My " YARD " saw is a ms250 love that lil booger
Got one of those too. Great for around the home place, and not so heavy it'll wear you out like the bigger ones. Only complaint I have about the stihls, if you don't use them a lot they are a pain to start

Yes sir its a good lil saw .. I won't say they are a pain to start but they are VERY cold natured but once they get warm you cant stop them.

I got the Stihl MS 250. I would like to get the Stihl Farmer or is it rancher? The farmer would have a 20 inch bar. I only use the high octane 50:1 premixed fuel.

If my Brother Shy High Tree Azz says Stihl then Stihl it is because one thing my brother knows is sawing trees. :D

Stihl MS 290 (Farm Boss I think) best saw I've ever had. Have to use that blue enzyme stuff to help start it if I let it sit a long time, but I would buy another without thinking about it.

I have had the stihl ms250 for 4 or 5 yrs, no problems starting it, love it the only regret I have is I bought it with a 16" bar, wish I had a 20". I use the cheapest unleaded out of the nozzle for it.
