I browsed through part of the book and plan to read it when I get time. Younger people in particular should read things like this to get a good perspective of what life was like. My gosh, I don't think they even had cell phones.
If you like the "real" stuff, you would probably like "The Cattlemen". I think it is the one by W. R. McAfee. About two brothers ranching some years back in the real world.
Gives a good description of how life was. One major problem was fighting screw worms. In the morning a man would ride out and do what had to be done by himself.
Their "infrastructure" was a horse, saddle and rope.
I don't think they ever heard of a headgate, squeeze chute, calf table, or "call the vet". They didn't worry about animal rights people telling them how cruel it was to rope a calf or "bust" a steer.
They did with what they had and that was that. (They were not hobby farmers :lol2: )
Sometimes I just shake my head when I read of all the stuff a beginner is supposed to have when he asks for advice and has two cows.
One member, whoever he was, that used to post a lot that had a pretty good idea of reality was Caustic.
He had been there, done that. At least one of the Caustics had. There were also some other people that knew about the real world. Cattle Annie comes to mind. Thinking about how she used a pitchfork to adjust the atttude of harmful bovines makes me smile.
But back to original subject, "Half Broke Horses" looks good to me.
