Goldenrod Fence Stretcher

I think they work pretty decent. The jaws have some grip to them so if you carry a hammer it usually will grip about anything if you tap the jaw down a little.

Anyone here got one? How does it grab the H-T barbed wire?

Any other Made in USA models out there that are worth a look? My old one gave up the ghost last night.
I have one and have used it very little. It is very awkward and you almost need three hands to use.

I prefer to get the fence back somewhat tight while mending and then use a Jake Wire Tightener to get it tight. These things are as handy as a pocket on a shirt working/patching a fence. Also if I come back latter and the fence needs tightening again just give the Jake tightener another round and the fence is tight again.

TSC sells a SpeeCo wire gripper that I have one the end of a cable puller.Guess you cold put one on each end,Mine doesn't hold HT wire the best if you are stretching tight unless you hold the wire around 70 degrees to the side.

Have you read the instructions j. .. :cboy:
I can use it one handed. You might be getting the wire snug with jakes. But you ain't getting it tight..no offense man. Just the truth.

To properly stretch anything over a hundred feet you need to use a come along and a wire dog. The golden rod is to take the slack between the wire dog and post. Or it's great on short pulls.

I'll second that Fence. I typically use the Goldenrod to fix broken wires or tighten up loose wires. For building new sections you'd never be able to get the wire tight enough. Different tools for different applications.

Thanks FM.. Where do you get one of them?

I am guessing you put the bw thru the loose ring and then thru the fixed ring to hold the wire with the come along on the fixed ring? How far off am I?

Get the one with three hooks, it is well worth the extra money. It allows you to reposition the ratchet without giving up any slack. You can make longer pulls with it.

Interesting. I buy dozens of the things a year.
If I buy one with three hooks it's because that's all they had. And the first thing I do is cut that extra hook off. Just gets in the way :2cents:

Goldenrod works fine. I'm not a professional fence man but I have stretched miles and miles of HT barbed wire with it. Like said earlier, may have to tap a little on clamps to get jaws to hold, but don't tap too hard or something could crack. Do not let your hand rest on wire during tightening process or prior to wire being secured to pull posts and goldenrod removed because slippage can occur at any time. I've pulled 700-800 ft or more at a time with it between pull posts. Wire still tight.

Thanks, all.

I use the Goldenrod types to fix broken wires, handy to keep in the truck. Never used it on new fence, I've gotten to where I put a H-T strainer in each wire now if it's a long pull.

Someone mentioned tapping the jaws with a hammer to get some extra bite. My old one had a bent jaw and the wire slipped down beside it last night, so when I couldn't get it loose with a couple light taps I beat the living **** out of the whole thing. Hence the need for a new puller.

That's the way things work at TGF. Except I sling it as far as possible and then run a tire or mower over it in a year or two.

That doesn't seem to work for me . Are you running over it from a certain angle or just randomly

Apparently you have never used Jake tighteners. I can break the wire with ease tightening with a Jake tightener. I can have the Jake tighener on/fence tight and gone before you can get you Goldenrod even on the wire. Also I can come back latter and re-tighten with ease or take the Jake tightener off if I am taking the wire down. I have both and the Goldenrod is probably 20 years old and still has the original paint on it. I don't use it stretching new wire that I am putting up just mending a broken wire or one that is stretched and loose.
