I called about a couple of gelbvieh bulls today, and will be looking at them tommarrow. They are AI calves, some from freedom, and some from free agent. I know that these are both very popular bloodlines. Do any of you have any experience with their calves? Any info on these 2 bloodlines?
thanks
Jeff

I've had a few Freedom calves and have a daughter and grandaughter in the herd, but my experience overall is limited with Freedom. I have not used any Free Agent semen but was considering it until the price on his semen went to $50 this year.

Both Freedom and Free Agent (a Freedom son) are known for their ability to sire attractive progeny. Freedom has been one of the most heavily used, if not the most heavily used Gelbvieh bull in the breed the past five years. Free Agent has also became a very popular bull the past few years.

Freedom is known for siring calves that are born relatively easily (though I don't know if he is a true "heifer bull") and grow well. One of my concerns of Freedom is that he is fairly larged framed. I was told that when he was measured as a young bull his frame score was around 6.5, but when they measured him a year later he was a 7.4. Most of the semen suppliers still promote his using his lower frame score (I think this happens a lot in all breeds). Though he will sire calves with thickness, I don't think he works well on more refined females.

Free Agent is known for siring smaller framed calves than his daddy, and considered more of a calving ease bull than Freedom. Unfortunately, his calves also tend not to grow as well post weaning as the Freedom calves. Though we don't have any of his daughters in production, he is being promoted as a bull that produces cows with small teats and nice udders.

Freedom will take the marbling completely out of them, even when used on Angus cows.

Gelbvieh breeders are using the snot out of him since they sell easily, and look good.

If you are at all interested in marbling, and eating quality, stay away from Freedom.

I agree with mtnman about Freedom's marbling and the fact that Gelbvieh breeders are using "the snot out of him." In addition to Free Agent, there are several other Freedom sons and grandsons that are also being used extensively....way too much influence by one bull in the breed.
