Has anyone used him on heifers? His BW is only 3.0 but Robin Meeks said that they dont use him on heifers.

Should I be concerned about the BW? What is average for hereford calves?

3.0 is below average and is at .72 accuracy.

Another question that I have is on the Calve ease. Is this the calf or the sire or the mother? It has to be the calf doesn't it? EPD ( should be for the calf right?)

Thanks JHH

What I want to breed him to is 3 heifers that have been pelvic measured and will be 2 1/2 when they calve.

are their any other suggestions to what to breed them to other than a black bull ( I may breed them to 878 )

I guess I should also say that the bull that I have is probably to big for them. He is a 5.7 BW. Although I didnt have any trouble with him and heifers this year I feel that he is to big for the heifers. ( size wise )

I still think that these heifers should be able to lay down and have an 80 lb calf and breed back. This however is my opionion and is not the case for every person or his or her cow herd.

For example ( mayby I am lucky ?) my first couple of calves that I had 2 years ago were on heifers and averaged 80 lbs but I did have 2 BIG calves with no problems. These weighed around 90 to 94 lbs ( I cant remember with out looking it up) and they bred right back. As they have this year ( Fall calves) to.

Am I just ignorant on this BW thing or have I just not been burned yet?

Neon is a pretty big bull, no way would I use him on heifers. I believe that 3.0 BW will soon climb to more like 5.0 or even 6.0.

THG

Also, forgot to add that Upstream Ranch does ahve some pretty big BW progeny every year, so if they say not to use him on heifers, I wouldn't.
