How does one go about getting started as an order buyer or working for someone as an order buyer?

Most I know are independent and simply have connections with people who buy cattle or calves for slaughter or feeding.
But....."it's not what you know, but who you know".

If you are talking about buying feeder calves, then go to one of the bigger order buyers gathering yard and ask for a job. You will not start out in the sale barns , but will learn to sort cattle that other buyers have bought and sent in. You will learn to determine quality and to guess weights. When the head man has determined that you have picked up the necessary skills, he will send you to a few sales and you will continue to work at the pens for a while.
