I am getting ready to buy a new bull for my girls. Old bull not shooting 100% anymore. Will be selling a registered black angus at sale and will start shopping. Happy with the angus but any info on other breeds will be appreciated.

what breed are your cows or crosses are they.since your running an angus .im assuming they are angus. so id say a hereford bull on the cows.scott

Russell,

We need more info.

First of all, what is the breed composition of your cows?

Do you sell the calves at weaning or feed them out?

What are the shortcomings of your cows that you hope to improve with your new bull (i.e. more growth, better calving ease, etc.)?

Will you be keeping replacement heifers back from the new bull that you buy? If so, do you hope to increase the milk production of your next generation of cows?

Do you think you need a little ear (i.e. Brahma influence) in your next bull?

Will you be breeding heifers to the new bull?

I run him with 10 crossbred older cows (12-15 yrs). I bought them with a lease a couple of years ago. When I bought them there was a big headed herford bull with them that did not know the meaning of a fence (new or old). He went to the sale pretty quick. I bought the black mainly because everyone said black with white face is where the money is. I have kept back 4 heifers last year but nothing serious. Need to keep something very friendly because of my kids. Been lucky so far.

then since you want something gentle i say go back to the herefod bull. a few bulls can get to where they dont care bout fences.no matter what breed they are. scott

Hereford would work on those angus cross young cows. With the little bit of information I have on your herd, that is a safe bet; though another go around with the Angus would certainly not hurt either.

The Texas Hereford association has several bulls for sale listings on it's web site; though I don't know how close they are to your place (Texas is freakin huge afterall)

My uncle has about 4 bulls ready to breed for sale and one sire that is breeding call for pics and prices. There out of Bright Side, 314C and other great sires. Call if interested!!

Bright Side? As in Brangus? Maybe there are some Brangus bulls that are actually domesticated, but I haven't seen them yet. I wouldn't go there if disposition is a big issue.

If you're on the gulf coast, you may want to consider something that has some "ear" because of the heat and insect tolerance. That of course depending on how much "ear" your cow herd has.

I can't imagine any black hided ,non-Bos Indicus influenced cattle would be happy in that climate.

I get around a lot and I see good looking Angus and Hereford cattle in South Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, AND in Louisiana. It has been many years since I last have been too Texas; but they were there too the last time I visited. While he may get some use out of the Brahman type cattle, he would be the best judge of whether or not they are needed in his herd (who could already be eared cows for all we know).

i have a braford - 5/8 hereford and 3/8 brahman and i really like the calves. i just bought another braford to use on the heifers. i like a little ear on my cows 3/8's is good.
