I am looking for a 1200# cow maker to use on my home raised heifers, and on a couple cows that have had over 100# calf bw.
Looking hard at Final Answer, Front Range, Oak Hollow bulls.

What tips or experiences can you share?

Final Answer is the only one that has the proof isn't he? I'd go with the proof. Genex has a new bull "Connealy Insure" that has great numbers - no proof.

A 1200# cowmaker heifer bull is Prime Time D806 - that's who I use on most my heifers - but he's not Genex.

Can't help much with that, most of mine are in the 6 frame range and a couple hundred pounds heavier. I have some Sinclair Extravagant 6X7 and OCC Prototype 847P to try, they would probably do what you want to do, but not any real good data on them yet, still a little early.

I think Oldtimer may be some help for that size cow.

Not a BA breeder but have seen Oak Hollow genetics and would highly recommend them.
Very functional cattle.

I don't follow many Genex bulls- but the old Oak Hollow 7709 is about the most proven moderate framed bull they have with great calving ease....

An intriquing young bull that is not that well proven that I think could do great for making moderate framed heifers is Sinclair Timeless... Great calving ease EPD's- and a N Bar Prime Time D806 (who to me is the best calving ease/cowmaker combination bull I've ever used) grandson -- and a pedigree of cowmakers....

Calved another heifer to D806 today. Bull calf came 3 weeks early. 73 lbs. I think he musta been on the teat before he hit the ground! I'm a believer in that bull for heifers. That said, I might have to start adjusting my heifer ai dates because they all seem to come so early with him. (Sorry for the thread steal, but if you're not married to Genex you should really give D806 a look. Seems like he's exactly what you're after.)

I see a wide range of calf vigor with BA or simi angus. Usually a "big" (85# plus) bull calf who is not a good sucker.

Do you see this too?

I agree with you on D806... I've even had them come backwards on their own out of heifers... And they're reaching for the teat before they hit the ground...I've got about a dozen D806 daughters and granddaughters now that so far are showing them selves to be good momma cows....

Thats one reason the Sinclair Timeless bull kind of peeks my curiousity..And besides D806- with the 707, Right Time, EXT, Emulation, Jorgenson bloodlines in his pedigree he sure has the background to be a momma cow maker...

They say that Right Answer is just as good as Final Answer. At least thats what they were pushing down here if you didn't want to pony up the $ for Final Answer. Had a buddy that used Oak Hollow on a few head. Seamed to get along alright.

Genex provides much better service than ABs in my area,

and Final Answer is back ordered here,

so Oak Hollow will have to get it done on the colored cattle!!!

I don't see any problems with 85 # calves. In fact, I'd probably target 80# on cows.

I've stayed away from EXT bloodlines as I ws told they throw a mean one every now and then. Have you not found this to be true?
I prefer Rito 6I6 on heifers that are related to my herd bulls. Top notch calving ease, increased muscle, very gentle animals awesome carcass to boot! Very good mommas

Valerie- I like Rito 6I6 too...Good bull.. I stayed away from D806 for years just because of the EXT in his pedigree-and because disposition is so important to me-but then after talking with several that used him and had no problems-- I tried him...
So far all the daughters we have are quiet- eat cake from your hand- and no excitement when they calve or are worked... I've also used a couple of other bulls with EXT a few generations back and had no problems (but I like to keep him at least a couple of generations back).. And years ago I had a 5522 son for a bull that was one of the quietest I ever owned...But you are right- old Emulation 31 and EXT both had/have a reputation for bad dispositioned cattle..

Besides what D806 has to offer for maternal qualities and frame moderation I liked the carcass/marbeling quality he can add... We just butchered a D806 sired steer that we fattened on grass- and it is some of the nicest marbled tender steaks I have ever ate.... :D

I had one bad one with an attitude, guess it just matched up just right. For now , I'll not take any chances, I'm glad he's done well for you.

Stocker Steve, you have problems with 85+ lb calves? What bloodline may I ask?
Valerie

Was using Hoff Weight Lifter 806.
Part of the issue is the put together cows. I have a couple with some Simi or SH blood and their calves were running between 98 and 118#.
The other part of the issue is my cows calve on pasture so I if get a dumb one it is not always obvious. SH seem to mother up on their own but simi/angus is a mixed bag.
