I got a copy of the sire's pedigree and it says at the top next to his name *Genetic Merit (BLUP) - Class 1*.

You need to check with the association who issues the registrations to see what that means. Every one is different and it could mean different things to different breeds, or even different things about the same breed in different countries.

(BLUP) Best Linear Unbiased Prediction
This was an early method of calculating estimated breeding values. The American Holstein Association used it at one time, I don't know if they still do or not.
