Though I am still getting used to the new EPDs from the Gelbvieh association, in my opinion it is the right thing to do. The Simmental association also runs EPDs for a couple of other breeds, including Maine-Anjou so I assume that eventually the Maine association will choose to go to the same base as well. I think part of the concern for many breeds going to the same EPD base as Red Angus, Simmental, and Gelbvieh is that the new EPDs won't necessarily reflect well on their breed. For example, the EPDS may show that their cattle are significantly higher in birth weight or much smaller in REA.
Over time I suspect that most breeds will try and go to common EPD base, though I suspect that the Angus association will be one of the last to make the move.
