Hey Guys, got a question for those out there that know a lot about Gelbvieh. :)
I'm thinking about breeding an Angus heifer to a Gelbvieh Bull. Do ya'll think Angus/Gelbvieh is a good combination? How did this mix turn out for you? (if you've ever had one). I don't know much about gelbvieh, didn't find out what I wanted to on google so I came here. :) Just wondering what ya'll have to say about them...

Thanks.
LG :D

The Gelbvieh angus cross is now refered to as "Balancer". The make a great cross, at least ours that are Red Angus based are. The only caution is the same as it would be with any Gelbvieh, watch for too much milk.

Started crossing my Gelbvieh cow herd with Angus in the late 90's to make balancer calves. Haven't regretted one single thing. I think you will be pleased with the outcome of the mating. Might I recommend an ABS bull M/L Encore for your Angus Heifer. He is a proven bull, great calving ease, calves hit the ground growing. I have personally used him several times.

Bandit, that's a good bull. They also have him listed at the Bull Barn http://www.bullbarn.com/gelbepd.asp?ID=274

I tried to access the ABS site and it appears to not be functioning.

Tennessee I'm not knockin your bull but she does have an Angus heifer to breed, so I doubt she would get anything but blk calves out of the Encore bull and so what if she did. The other thing about the bull you recomend is he's not any kind of a heifer bull. He's probably real good on your cows but with those numbers not what she is looking for, otherwise I like him.

I too tried to link the page, but couldn't get the ABS to work properly. Might try again later.

The Bennet Premier bloodlines show up in a lot of bulls, and the Z104 bull was wildly popular.

Aint homozygous black. I wouldn't use him simply because of that fact. I reckon it would fine if you had purebred angus cows that were homo black but if the cow was a red carrier I definitely would not use him.

This is my favorite Gelbvieh bull. He throws small calves that grow real good. Best of all he is homozygous black and homozygous polled.

I too like your "Junior" bull. I have 3 Junior bull calves running around my place this year. I recommended Encore because of his proven calving ease. I have personnaly used him, and his calves have generally weighed 65-75 out of my heifers, and then grow like weeds. Have never pulled a calf out of him, and have used him several times. I don't know that Junior would be my choice to use on heifers, but I reckon he would probably work. Cows, however, absolutely and without hesitation.

Bandit
Check out the numbers on this bull. I just talked to the prople who own him and will [robably use him on my blk GV cows next year. He will throw some scurs and horns so he needs a polled cow but these numbers are off the charts in most if not all catagories. They man I talked to said that the numbers have held up well with a lot of calves on the groung so accuracies are good.

That birth to yearling spread is outstanding. I would like to see a current picture of him. Several of my cows are horned gene carriers, so I would have to be real careful in using him. Only thing I see that I don't like is he goes back to KCF Bennet Premier Z104. Not that he is a bad bull, I just have ALOT of cows that have him in their pedigree. I could probably line breed, but I am not educated enough about that to get into that practice yet.

Bandit I was trying to get some recent pics myself. Aparently they're are none and they are not too concerned about it. I do have a website that shows some of his sons and they have been sale toppers. I will try to post it here later on.

As far as line breeding goes he is a gr grandson of the 104 bull and your cows are grandaughters at best i'm guessing. Personally I don't think that's very close, and actually what would be wrong with linebreeding a little to one of the most used GV sires of all time.

As much as I like gelbvieh, I wouldn't recommend anyone use them on british heifers. It's a given fact that cross-bred animals will outgrow a purebred animal, are we naive enough to think that growth spurt starts at birth? I'd throw in the term "hybrid vigor" here but I've grown to hate those words after hearing them from every research analyst who is finding out what we've known all along: a cross-bred animal is more efficient. Use an angus bull the first go-round, then go for the gelbvieh. You'll sleep better.

You would be correct in saying my cows are granddaughters, and great granddaughters. I have several femals that are out of a bull called Polled Pepsi, who is a z104 son, as well as cows that go back to M/L Advantage, and M/L Encore. I guess the more I think, it would be some very "distant" linebreeding. Seems all his progeny are easy keeping, fertile, docile animals, at least in my experiences.

Thanks for all the input! :D And thanks for all the bull suggestions too. Just out of curiosity, what are Gelbvieh temperament like?

LG :D

Very good. It's one of their best qualities.

When I was shopping for bulls late last year I had decided on a Gelbvieh or a balancer to put on my mostly angus cows. I look closely at several Junior bulls and was very impressed. The bulls that impressed me the most were Atlas 101 bulls. Wow his bull calves looked awesome and the EPD's were pretty impressive also. I am seriously looking at going with one of the 101 bulls on my next go around. Right now I am curious to see how my balancer bull performs.

Temperment on these cows are excellent, tuff to find easier going cattle. Their great momma's and give good milk taking that and pairing it with angus how can you go wrong. The best of both world's, pick the right bull to breed to your heifer. Look at her size(BW) and match it with one of the many real good gelbvieh bulls that are out there. I think you'll like what you see. Good luck
