What's it good for? Rental place had some that was being used as electric fence that I took out.
 
This is free, is it worth using to build fence? Its rental now but I should own it someday.
 
If I had a choice between paying for red brand and free gaucho wire I would gladly pony up for the red brand and consider myself money ahead.

This was pretty much my thinking just wanted to make sure I wasn't underestimating it.

Seeing as how it's free would it be worth using on an interior fence? Its a thirty five acre field currently divided into divided in thirds. It doesn't have to stay that way. The existing lot fencing is junk but I had been thinking of replacing them with high tensile electric.

I don't care if the stuff rots in the barn, I'm just trying to find if its suitable for anything.
 
We live in oilfield country that produces a lot of gas that escapes into the air, the gas is very corrosive and eats on metal , Gaucho is the only wire that will last, I have some Gaucho fences 35 years old that show no sign of corrosion , all you can get out of any other wire is 10 -15 years and it will be on the ground. The gaucho will outlast the T-post. If anyone has ever driven through Luling Tx. You know what I am talking about with the gas smell.
 
Well, it is hard to work with, as is all hi tension wire, but it doesn't rust, and it doesn't just get loose for no other reason than hangin there or a cow pushing on it. I've had 120+ acres fenced with it since the mid 60s along with some red brand. You can tell the red brand sections immediately--it's loose, rusty or missing.
Gaucho WILL break, but it takes a lot, (like a tree or big limb falling on it) but I just put my golden rod on it, pull it right back tight, (and I mean TIGHT!) crimp a ferrule on it and it's good as new. I've never had a cow run thru but one fence, and that was a crazy heifer that just went nuts one day after calving.

If it's nailed to an oak it will rust through. The few places that we seldom use that has gaucho is always breaking where it passes against an oak
 
I take your word for it dun--I try very very hard not to staple any fence wire to trees. Hurricane comes along and you got no fence. (Oaks here are shallow rooted--high water table)

They're the most common tree around here other than cedars. Most places they just use them for posts along the edge of wooded areas.
 
I'm with GB. I use it when I'm building a new fence. It will stay tight better than wire that isn't pre-stretched. However, new fences is all I use it for. I keep a roll of the domestic wire for patching. And I've known people to use Gaucho for building gaps. They should have a dozen or so wraps of it put around them and then be rolled down a steep hill.
 
Been using it since the early 80's.When the flood in '85 came through,we had o build a goo bit of fence.The Class I galv. soft wire is almost all gone of its usable life.The Hi tensile Gaucho,while not shiny, is still grey in color and holding well.I've also used their woven ire and like it very well,although I am starting to buy Sta-Tuff now for their locked stays. Some newer fences are hi-tensile smooth.
Also like the fact that you can unroll Gaucho by yourself with a carrier tool I bought.
Gaps are another thing as was mentioned earlier.

Guess you just have to be tougher than the wire to like it.

Its really a preference. The both last if you buy good name brand wire (not from lowe's or any other box store). You just have to decide if you like re-stretching wire or splicing wire. With regular wire if a cow, hog, deer, ect goes through it they will stretch it out, but it will still be there. If a cow, hog, deer goes through gaucho it will be a clean break that you will have to splice back together.

... again, we use both. If a fence it in gaucho I fix it with gaucho. Any thing I build new is regular, low tensile, American wire because its easier to work with. I know 2 guys who have gashes across their faces from gaucho breaking. I've seen it a couple times myself and its not fun. The American wire just breaks and falls, if you break it. Gaucho flies like jumping cactus.
 
Wait a minute. Are you all referring to any High Tensile barbed as Gaucho? And Red Brand as a general term for standard bw? Red Brand makes HT BW. That's what I prefer... over the Korean made stuff.
