Got back from the Ft Worth Brahman Show last night about 2am. I placed 4th with my bull (as expected) and 9th with my heifer. My goal for the show was to get my heifer into the show ring and back out without getting hurt like the last couple times (explained it a while back, she got spooked real bad at a show in Sept. and now does at any shows). In my eyes, Ft Worth was a complete success simply because she acted well.

I am happy with the show except for one thing. The judge was placing all FFA kids at the end. The guy I bought my heifer from, Will Detering of Detering Red Brahmans even said that the judge was picking a select few ranches for the winning positions. He said a lot of the FFA kids had a lot better animals than they were placed. Oh well, its over and I am happy with what happened there.

I see that happen a lot down here in Texas.. 4-H kids and kids with those popular ranch calves (i.e. V8) seem to place better just cause the brand even though they don't always have the better calf! Not very fair but who said life was, right? Well congratulations on your placing!

A lot of the smaller shows it is possible, even if the big names are showing, but the majors are not. Winning means so much money for them. It is just business for them, and winning means better business. It sure aint right, but its not gonna keep me from going out there and showing my animals and having fun.

Well said TX. Unfortunately this happens everywhere, not just in Texas. Seen a lot of really good stock not place, while others that were questionable,(age, breeding, etc.) take the prize.

Sorry about that earlier post...darn smiley faces. Was referring to the V8 ranch. They've got superior cattle but I've seen kids with better calves place lower just cause of the brand, really.

Steers don't show for another week or so at Ft Worth. We go down the thursday after next with ours.

We showed our Longhorns Tuesday (youth) and Wednesday (open). We did really well, especially for the number of entries in each show. There were 320 entries in the youth show, 150 junior females, and just over 200 in the open show.

Youth:
Grand Champion Female
Senior Champion Female
Reserve Junior Champion Female

Open:
Grand Champion Bull
Senior Champion Bull
Reserve Junior Champion Female
Reserve Senior Champion Female
Champion Produce of Dam

THere were a lot of really good animals there. I think non-longhorn breeders might be surprised at the quality of the longhorns.

Good Luck to all of those yet to show. Hope you place well, and have a great time.

Well here are my results(sp)...i got 4th out of 7th  guess it could of been last, but the judge wasn't staying the same he was more of the if you had a good brand you got higher up. but you know its over now can't change the past

Yeah, very goofy. The Brahman judge placed all of the FFA kids in last, no matter what. Hopefully San Antonio will be better. Of course, I show on Superbowl Sunday, but Ill have a mini TV there.

Still, congrats bh. I'm not lookin forward to showin...I hate when the judges get screwy like that. (that is unless they get screwy and start lookin for frame more than fill once they get to the american classes...then i'm in good ;-)) Good luck to those that show brahmas monday.

I find it hard to believe a judge of his caliber can screw up all the breeds he judged except for one. Remember this is a breeding beef show. It is about structure, frame, soundness and reproductive ability not who had the best fitter. Sounds to me like a case of sour grapes. I know the young man who had the grand champion hereford. That is a beautiful heifer with all the right qualities to win a breeding beef show. She is a complete package. Not only but that same heifer has won several very competitive shows recently so all those judges can't be wrong.

He may have judged the limis right, but the Angus and Maine show was a joke. I had friends in the shorthorn and hereford showsand it was pretty messed up too.

I watched the Shortorn show and could easily follow the type that was trying to be set. THe other side of the ring had a very capapble man look at the Polled Herefords and Herefords. Needed to be deep bodied, long and smooth. Iwatched the same man in the Santa Gertrudis show had he was very easy to follow in the first 3 slots. After that it really doesn't matter.

I was not there Saturday, so I cannot comment on the Angus show.

I did watch the Santa Gertrudis cattle under Dr. Able. He used good functional cattle that had some substinence to them (depth, shape of rib, bone) along with being smooth and feminine. He was picking the same kind in the Polled Herefords.
