PBS had an excellent program on the relationship between animals, antibiotics and the food Chain.
I hope a lot of the Farmers were watching this, I believe Mr Inyati would understand more of the Technical Terms and the graphs .
It sounds like Changes are coming , but the lobbyists will be a problem,as was the Agri, secretary in 1977, when the scientist first warned about, antibiotic resistance in hospitals. If you get the Chance to see this program please watch it.

Animal agriculture is a scape goat here to a certain degree. There are improvements that can be made in the industry, but it is not the most effective way to limit resistance. Human medicine needs to change if we want to preserve the effectiveness of current compounds. Doctor's are generally not going to blame themselves for a problem when they can make a case someone else is at fault.

yep....public goes to the doctor with a mild virus and demands the doctor give them an antibiotic....
doctor caves and gives them a prescription....
even though most times the antibiotic will do them no good...
patient then misuses the antibiotic....
does not take the full course....or takes it until they feel worse...or otherwise self medicates....
all leading to bacterial resistance....
best protection against virus is immunization if there is one for the disease...

Then dumps the rest down the toilet si it eventually gets into the water table.
But it may do that anyway even if they take it all and just pass it normally

Thanks for the link Slick.

Gotta love those reporters who scratch the surface of topics (don't mind me, I'm just ranting)....Would have been nice if they explained how resistance to cephalosporins are linked to tetracycline use. These are two completely different class of antibiotics. Cephalosporins are more closely related to penicillins (beta-lactam family) than tetracyclines....

Anybody have a clue?

I just know I am allergic to Sulfa and penicillin--they give me tetracyline instead of penicillin if I absolutely HAVE to have an antibiotic.
