My cousin's family just recently brought home a kid or two from this program and if its not the quickest why to earn a temporary barn hand I don't know what is. The look on these kids faces when they met our cows was priceless. I suggest this takes a good look at, more city folk should have the chance to be exposed to outside the city.
The gist of it is, one or two kids from the heart of NYC stay at a person's house outside of the city for a week or two during the summer. My family is definitely planning on looking into it again. I hope that the children's experience taught them more about the world of Agriculture.
Take a look. :D

I was involved in the big brother program several years ago. I had 2 kids I was responsible for. Working on the farm, was not really frowned on, but not really encouraged. They seemed to enjoy it more, than bowling etc. We all 3 dropped out of the program, and they went to work for me. One is a veterinarian now, and the other went in the navy. The navy kid, ended up a nurse practitioner. I claim no responsibility for their success. They both had a far more profound influence on me, than I had on them.

My neighbors had a a few kids come up from the same family for many years. They said it was a great experience for all, and the family's kids got to be very close with the kids who came to visit.
I've mentioned on other threads my experiences volunteering with inner-city kids. If you have never been in their environment, it's really hard to understand just how little connection and access they have to nature. Even a simple park.
I'm glad for programs like this (although agree you have to be careful about not just getting them for farm help. That said, a bit of dirt under their nails ain't a bad thing at all).
