I'm looking at a 2003 F250 6.0 L crew cab 2 wd. Are these engines any good? What kind of power and fuel mileage could I be looking at?

31k miles blew turbo, intercooler and electric fuel pump
33k miles blew both head gaskets and radiator all at the same time! :?:  Like a rock, sitting in the sand

Some guys seemed to have had luck with the 6.0Ls south of the border, however north of the border they certainly didn't. Leaking injectors, broken cranks, blown turbos. Even the last round of injector fixes still had issues, and I haven't personally run into a single 6.0L owner who didn't wish they'd stuck with their 7.3 or looked to another diesel.

There were so many issues with the 6.0L that its brought about a rift between Navistar and Ford, a partnership thats been in effect since 1979 (76?). If the 03 that you're looking at hasn't had any of the updates done (turbo, injectors), then I'd stay a long ways away, especially if it doesn't have warranty left.

I have an 05 with no problems. It gets around 14 mpg city/highway driving.
The earlier 6.0's did have problems. Check out one of the diesel truck forums such as "the dieselstop" or "ford truck enthusiasts" for more info.

Stay away from 03 and 04 models with the 6.0. There are a few early 03 models that have the old 7.3 that would be okay. Apparantly Ford and IH got the bugs worked out and the 05 and new models are okay for the most part.

At one time ford was offering a $5000 rebate to any owner of 03 or 04 6.0 diesel toward the price of a new truck. If you didn't have a 6.0, the rebate was only 2500. If that's not an admission by a manuafacturer that an engine has issues, I'm don't know what would be.
