I am planning on planting dwarf millet this spring. I saw a post that you did on Tifleaf millet with cowpeas but now can't find it to read again. I am in East Texas. The pasture is currently in cereal rye / ryegrass. I will disc then drill the millet at 30 pounds/ac. I was wondering if there was much benefit to adding cowpeas. I plan on cutting 1 time for baleage and grazing the rest of the season. I have never planted cowpeas.
Does it add enough to the quality to add it?
If so, how do you plant the cowpeas with the millet (broadcast before or after, put in clover box on drill, or mix with millet seed)?
Do the cowpeas come on mostly early or late in season?
I plan on doing soil test for fertilizer recommendation, when is best to put out fertilizer in relation to planting? I put out chicken litter last fall before planting winter pasture and have topdressed with ammonium nitrate once, so there will be residual left.
It will be an interesting year. I am planting 50 acres in millet on sandy upland, and 50 acres of bottom pasture in Crabgrass. I have planted the bottom pasture in Sorghum Sudan past 2 years. I can irrigate the bottom with K line but cant use it with SS because of dragging the lines across crushes the stalkes. I have read that Crabgrass is not recommended for bottom pastures but talked to Mr Dalrymple and he thinks will work. I have native crabgrass growing there, so gonna try and pray for rain this year!
Thanks in advance
Chris
