We have a cow with foot rot. I am feeding her a chlortetracycline drug in the form of crumbles on top of her feed. My problem is I do not know how much to give her. The directions on the bag are very unclear. Has anyone tried this for foot rot? :help:

ive never tryed the crumbles for footrot.weve always given them a shot of LA200 50ccs once a day for 3 days.if that dont clear it up.she may need tobe looked at by a vet.an have her foot cleaned an wrapped.

You'll never get enough of that in her to do it . Try to get her on the dry .Flush it out with iodine .
I would use LA 200 injected . There will be others post with some other ideas . We don't see that much foot rot here, but those suggestions will work better than what your doing .

When you try to give meds orally... you're always at the mercy of the digestive system. Besides the fact it's going to take most of the bag just to get an effective dose into her, you're far better off to give it IM or SC. Excenel, LA200, maybe penicillin... all perfectly adequate choices. Just don't bounce from one to another; pick a drug and stick with it.

i have used aueromyicin crumbles for a hard to handle cow my neighbor had. the bag said 1lb a day for 5 days. i used a good handful until i used 5 lbs. it is better if you can clean and soak it good with iodine., but sometimes it is not possible. my vet said to be careful with iodine, it is better to get them on a good mineral.

Just make sure that mineral has a good high level of iodine and if not add some. Some zinc in chelated form will help too over the long haul but most minerals won't have it.

All of your help has been great. We only have 1 large animal vet here and he is impossible to get in touch with, stays so busy. We live in Williamson County Tennessee and what used to be a thriving farming community is turning into house farming! Houses going up everywhere and very few cattle or farms left.
