I have notice the small flies already flocking to my cows . What are some of the things you all are doing that is effective and don’t have to break the bank. I have used (last year) a premethian mixed with diesel fuel and sprayed over their backs. (When I can get them still) I had a back rub but they tore it down 3 times.

Cylence, Ultra Sabre minerals with IGR.
As a management tool fly control is probably the cheapest for increased pounds. Flies can cost over ten pounds in weaning weight. Not counting medical cost of pinkeye. Never found the back rubs very effective along with
premethian doesn’t last till the first rain.

Best stuff I ever used is a product called Justifly. Cheapest place I've found it is Amazon. You need to start feeding it now.

Never used it but have heard good things about it. Inclusion rate is 3x the amount of Altosid 2% recommended and price per pound is about equal.

I seen a video on YouTube one time (by accident) and they had some sort of sticky trap they hung around water troughs, loafing/shady areas, and mineral licks. Looked like a glorified sticky mouse pad, but seemed to catch a pile of flies. Not sure if it was home made or if it was available at a retail outlet, but it was pretty neat.

I fill a garden sprayer with livestock fly spray and when I grain the cows, give them a nice misting every few weeks.
Mix it with diesel (or mineral oil) and it will last a lot longer on the coat.

I can't get a sprayer to last very long using diesel as the carrier. Someone here explained that the diesel will eat up the gasket, so you have to clean it after each use. That is a PITA.

I have used a cheap plastic sprayer for over 2 years. I may have a problem with it this spring.

Wished I had it! lol I was told the name of gasket material I needed but have long since forgotten. I remember searching for a sprayer with the right material but I don't guess I found it as it's been to long ago.

Mine is not special, but I think that handhelds that are called "solvent sprayers" would be best.

I use a handheld sprayer with diesel daily. Get a Chapin brand solvent sprayer it will last you a lifetime (steel). Cost about $100, find a concrete supply house. My :2cents:

Thanks, but I've already ordered. I've read up on the Vitrox and it is commonly used with diesel and related products, so I'm hoping it works out. Only spent $33 but that's with a plastic tank.
