Fly control for cows

My vote is for Ultra Sabre. But it's a pour on not a spray so this might not be what you were asking.

I second this. We also use Boss, depending on what type of fly is attacking. Use some permethrin mixed w/diesel in a hand sprayer for coverage if they get real bad.

I use Fly Ban. Marketed for horses but works wonders for flies & ticks on cattle, gone within 15 minutes, and lice in the winter. Already mixed, all you have to do is spray. This time of year we hit 'em every couple weeks. BTW, doesn't work on horse flies, not sure if anything does other than fly swatters or smacking them with your hand.

The fly ban seems really expensive how
often do you spray?

TC the horseflies are driving my old cows crazy. Every once in a while some of them will just take off running across the pasture with their tails straight up trying to get rid of them. Kinda funny but I know they are worrying them to death. If I stand still too long they will bite me too. They ain't particular.

it is expensive but we've never had luck with ear tags & our girls (and calves & bulls) are docile enough that we just walk down the line when we feed & blast them. The bulls will stand at attention, almost as if they know it will bring sweet relief. We typically spray every couple weeks this time of year & we keep medicated mineral with CTC available all year. Have had one case of anaplasmosis in 2010 before we started the Fly-Ban/mineral regimen & the only "pink eye" has been in the winter months, presumably from stemmy bales/eye abrasions.

No doubt! Hurts like a sonofabitch. We actually keep fly swatters in our Polaris' & the cows are used to us giving them a good smack but it's become almost a game to see how many I can scoop-n-smush with my hand. Did I mention I'm a cheap date? :yuck:

We been using Ultra Sabre with success also. As long as they stay out of water like ponds or creeks and it don't rain. Just like any other pour on or spray.

Been wanting to try Long Range anyone have any thoughts on it?

I just spray with diesel about twice a week and keep it on their rubs and mineral feeder. Also, we keep fly control mineral out always but I don't think that does much good, probably mostly a marketing/sales tool. I was going to put some fly control ear tags in today. Will it help more if I put a fly control ear tag in each ear?

I use Ultraboss cost about $100 per gallon does 280 head, 15cc per head lasts about 3 weeks around 36 cents per head if I spray them 10 times over the summer its only $3.60 per head and it works great.
I keep fly mineral out, it's only for horn flies, breaks the cycle, I think it works, I do all I can to keep flies away, it helps, there not swarming me when I'm out there.
I've used Long-range for 2 years, not for flies but it's a bonus. It will help with horn flies not face flies, like fly mineral it wont take care of face flies , I keep them sprayed so it will probably take care of both, the Long-range will supposedly keep horn flies from reproducing like fly mineral.

When I first started out, I would walk around spraying the cattle with chemicals mixed to their specifications with water and it didn't do jack squat. I finally put up some cattle rubs soaked with diesel, and it does a really good job on their backs and faces when using the strips that hang down.

Flies don't like diesel fuel.

The bathroom in the shop is a breeding ground for flies for some reason. I guess it stays warmer at night so the larvae can hatch? It is kept very clean but for some reason they were getting bad in there this year. Hung up some fly tags in there and it got rid of them. I think this is the only thing they are good for. Also makes for a very unique scent cover.

what, if any, is the concern with the cattle absorbing diesel through their skin?
I have wondered that but have sprayed them and used it on rubs for years and as far as I know never had a problem. I can remember when I was a boy grandpa kept a 55 gal. barrel of used motor oil and I have seen him dip a many ol coon dogs in it for fleas, ticks and mange. was nothing to see him dip it out an pour it on the cows for flies or put it on the hogs for lice. I always thought that must be hot in this 100 deg. weather. Hillbillies had a different way of doing things.
