First cutting finished

Well...we finished our first cutting of hay this week. We
ended up with about 700 big round bales. Last year we
baled over 1500 bales. We started feeding hay this week,
too. This is absolutely the earliest we have done this.

It's extremely dry here. Half of our ponds have dried up
and pasture is non-existent. We hauled two loads of
cattle to the sale this week. Some sold OK....others we
weren't too happy about. I guess we will be hauling weekly
loads throughout the summer. Unless it rains...we will
probably run out of hay and cattle at the same time.
It will be odd not having to feed this winter.

I am very sorry, Sevierite, but I'm glad you got some hay off the field - it sure beats a total bust like a lot of folks are experiencing. I would tell you I will add you to my list for prayers for rain, but you have been there for a while now.

I'm glad you got to cut. We are still on idle here. I could probably cut some but I'm not going to put my baler in a field for two rolls per acre. Looks like things are changing some so maybe we all will be getting back on track. Good luck.

Around here we'ld kill for even one bale an acre.

I guess I should have mentioned that we mowed nearly
300 acres for that 750 bales. We've chased hay around
fields everywhere around here. There's nothing left to
mow! Usually second cutting would be ready now. Those
April cut fields look like they were mowed yesterday.

Since my official job-title is hay mower...I guess I'm
outa work.

Looks like I should have waited longwer to bale ours. The neighbor baled his hay yesterday, got almost 4 bales to the acre. Some of the stemiest weed ridden hay I've seen in years. But by george, he got a lot of volume!

This year I'm looking for volume first. I'll worry about the quality once I get a good cushion under me - if that's possible. We sure could use another rain.

hey cattluvr.. Thats not a bad yield. That is what we are getting close to right now. BUt, with all the rain we have had, our fields are so wet now, we would get bogge down easily.
ITs feast of famine around here. Last year, so dry we thought we were gonna burn up; now.. so wet its just mud everywhere.

Mike, there have been several fires in hay fields around here lately, the hay fields are so dry and a spark from the tractor sets them on fire and it's RUN FOR YOUR LIVES.
