I'm playing spy. I'm keeping an eye on the first cow to calve for the season. She is the shy type and goes and hides everytime I show myself. I got some binos and am watching her from my upstairs window. I hope she pops it out with no trouble....and before dark :cboy:

  Rather don't ask  .

Hoss, I'm not going to ask if you have a calf yet, I'm dead sure you will let us know.

Well I ran out of daylight for my peeping tom activities. I checked on her at about 9:00 last night and she had feet and nose protruding. I backed off and waited a few minutes and I heard it "plop" out. She had it at about 9:20. Anyway I waited around until it stood and nursed. It looked like a heifer calf weighing maybe 75 pounds. Yep it is a Balancer calf  I am always excited about the first calf of the season but by the time calving is over I'm tired of tagging and banding. I may even keep up my tradition of posting a pic of the first calf

Way to go Hoss! Good job. I'm a double peeper I guess a set of Bino on the frig and another set on the screened-in porch.

OK....here she is. I'll keep a tradition alive. She is from my #61 cow. She had a bull calf last year that weaned around 640 pounds at 7 months. I don't think #61 weighs 1100 pounds soaking wet. She weaned well over half her body weight. If this heifer looks good she may be a keeper if she will perform like her mama.

On the backside of this pasture is a swamp filled with hardwoods, saw briars, multi flora rose, black berry bushes and thick with saplings or every stripe. It is only about 6 acres worth but it might as well be 1000. She hides her calf in the thickest, nastiest stuff she can find. She brought it out closer to the edge while she visited the hay ring.....that is the only reason I found it. She kept looking back in that general direction every few minutes. She will do this for about a week and then she will allow it to join the rest of the herd.
