Fire

Help Support CattleToday:

@Dave, how much forage (put in terms of # of days for # of head or in terms of bales (size) or in tons). How many miles of fence have you lost (or feet)?
The pasture here is spring grazing so It was done for this year. How much will I have come spring? Who knows? Fence, a mile and a half to 2 miles. None of that has even been looked at. This is still a very active fire. We will figure out losses in a month or two. Neighbors are losing cattle, grass, and fence right now. I am busy helping where I can. It is 103 out there. I duck in for water and the AC. I am about to go back out. Fire is now at 116,000+ acres. People are on level 3 evacuation (GO NOW) down by Vail and over toward Baker from here.

Prayers for you, your neighbors, and the wildland firefighters.

Power has been off for a while. Actually off for various parts of the last 4 days. The fire is now at 223,000+ acres and 0% contained. On the southwest corner it ran into the Cow Valley fire. The 2 added together cover 569 square miles. And we had lightning strikes this afternoon which started half a dozen new fires on the other side of the freeway. Sleep has been missed by everyone.

I heard there was a 747 fitted for fighting fires and the powers that be have delayed or possibly just refused to commission it for use... so it's been sitting for years. Any chance it's now in service and being used in your area? I think they were afraid of the possibility of hitting fire fighters with that much water. Still, you'd think they could manage that for the benefit involved.

We have a lot of smoke here in Riverton. I have not been able to see Beaver Rim for a few days now.

According to this map it looks like most of the fires are in Canada.

That would be the Supertanker. Lots of financial difficulties keeping it at the ready.

There have been jets flying here. They don't carry water. They are used to apply fire retardant. There is also a fleet of twin prop aircraft hauling retardant. You can see red stripes across the hills where they have made their drops.

Well the federal cluster F continues. They evacuated the post office??????????? There is a couple of those small fires started by lightning about a mile or more away on the other side of the freeway. Like a little grass fire is going to jump a 4 lane freeway when the wind is not even blowing that direction.

I'm sorry to hear all of this Dave. Fire is much like it's opposite, flood. You keep you and your's safe and you're helping elsewhere where you can and it's about all individuals CAN do.
It's a crappy deal that the fed govt isn't doing more!

Kenny would have had that fire out 2 weeks ago!

We had to move my cows and a bunch of other's cows today. Driving cows 5-6 miles on a 100+ degree day is less than ideal. I was guarding an opening as they went by. A lot of calves went by with their tongues hanging out a frothing at the mouth. I am going to have to watch them closely over the next several days. There is probably going to be some sick calves.

I hope that Dave and his neighbors are safe and they are able to safely recover all their cattle. Unfortunately, I know there will be loses.
The Durkee fire and Cow Valley Fires have now combined and cover close to 400,000 acres. It is now considered the highest national priority. I saw an interview with a rancher from the area saying they expected there would be significant losses of cattle. Possibly in the 1,000's because of how rapid this fire is spreading and how difficult it is to get to many locations and move cattle. The Oregon Cattleman Association's is taking donations to be disbursed to impacted ranchers once this horrible event is over. I thought I would pass this information on for those of you who wondered if there is any way to help.

OCA WILDFIRE FUND

As you are no doubt aware, much of Oregon's private and public lands are being impacted by wildfires. The number of Oregon ranchers affected remains to be calculated as the fire crews continue their efforts to battle numerous blazes across the state.

You can help! The Oregon Cattlemen's Association (OCA) will make financial assistance available to those impacted through an application process in the months to come. The amount of the disbursements will be directly correlated to the total donations received.

If you wish to make a contribution to the OCA Stewardship Fund, a 501c(3), select from the following options:
  • Mail a check to the OCA office, 1320 Capitol Street NE, Suite 150, Salem, OR 97301 with "Wildfire Fund Donation" in the memo line.
  • Complete and return the attached donation form to the OCA office or to [email protected].
  • Donate online at orcattle.com/wildfire-fund-donations/
Your donation will be placed in a restricted fund and held until the application phase begins, applications are received, reviewed by a special committee and disbursements determined.

If you have questions, contact Kallie Schoenbachler at 503-361-8941 or [email protected].

Thank you, in advance, for your selfless contribution.
