Last week, I was in Missouri with the lovely Lady of Fire Sweep Simmentals. I got there Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday, I attended one of Kris’ classes at Ozarks Technical Community College. Kris is an outstanding and talented teacher. She connects with her students and has a refreshing teaching style.

Friday, we visited the Genex facility in Springfield. Saturday, we worked some of her livestock including a difficult cow, Peaches. It took all of us to get her into the facility. The kids worked with their show stock. Their oldest daughter was there to do the clipping. Late that afternoon, their daughter's friend broke his left forearm riding a four-wheeler. It turned out to be a serious break. A piece of the radius was broken and rotated.

Sunday was a day of trepidation for me. I went to Church with the Fire Sweep Clan. It was not as bad as I imagined but I was sure thankful when I was back outside in the sunlight. Bling had her calf Sunday. Glenn loaded the calf across his lap for a ride to the barn. Bling ran along after the four-wheeler and was never more than a step behind. The bouncing calf caused Glenn’s pants to slip down. I turned to Kris and told her that Glenn sure has a pretty butt crack. I guess she has seen it before because it was not that amusing to her.

I thought the calf would weigh 90 pounds. It weighed 83.

On Monday, we were met at Owen Brothers Farm by Adam Owen. Adam has a talent for imparting useful information. In the span of two hours, I picked up some useful information. Their livestock is magnificent.

Kris has 6 of the nicest heifers I have seen anywhere. Lilly is a masterpiece. Ronnie, Elsa, Taylor and Bush are magnificent. Her cows look big to my eye. That was a surprise to me. My cows are better conditioned or you could say they are over-conditioned compared to Kris’ cows. I expected that. I did not expect that her cows on average are bigger than mine. Not so much in frame score but her cows are wide. They are thick muscled. She has a great cow herd. Kris is a good manager, breeder and organizer. She plans her matings and the results are there to admire. Kris is a cattle master in my book!

But the one who does all the heavy lifting is Glenn.

Gee, you could have left his butt crack out if it! ;-)

I have never seen someone so ashen white and sweating in church.... That was fun! I thought you might faint there Ron...

How close was I to guessing the weight of that calf Ron??? I think I said upper 80's, so I was close! He was bigger looking, that was for sure!
And thank you for the complements. We work hard at our matings, and are blessed.
We are currently at the American Royal, playing with the big dogs. Wish us luck! Glenn did all the work setting up the stalls while I took care of the cattle.... We work well together!
We enjoyed your visit, and anyone is welcome to come see our place. It is not special, but we work hard at what we got.

Wish I would have known inyati was in town. That might have been enough for me to go to the Genex field day. I think that had to be first one they held on a day that the weather wasn;t miserable.

dun, have you seen the Genex bull Wide Track? What a shame. He ruptured his inguinal canal and it looks like 6 pounds of his intestines are down in his scrotum. Adam Owen said they were using the bull at their farm when it happened. That is the biggest Simmental Bull I have seen. I saw Remington Lock and Load and Wide Track must be 600 pounds bigger.

The rupture is unrepairable. I guess they collect him. But seems it is a matter of time till he gets a strangulation.

Anne, glacierridgefarm, ask me who took care of my cows while I was gone.

Is the Church still standing? I figured that if that ever happened, ;-) the resulting lightning bolt would have burned it to the ground!

It looks like your cattle are in good hands while you are away Ron! What a cutie.

Yep, she is cute for a "hired hand". I traded my bull, Linus, for her. In exchange for Linus, I get to enjoy her company one night a week for a year. That is about all the work I can handle at my age. I don't even know her name. But her husband is a good friend of mine and they watch my cattle when I am away.

I had one issue with my hired hand when I was in Missouri. Her husband tried to muscle in on Margo. He found my stump and sent me a text that Margo was going to leave me. But now that I am home, I got her back. I gave her some very sweet kisses when I got back. All is well.

No kidding - The folks who watched my cattle were great. I got texts from them every day. I think it annoyed Kris when she was explaining something to me and I would get distracted by the texts. My friend and his wife love my farm and cattle. They enjoy being out there. He told me that he has never seen cattle as docile as mine. He asked me today if he could come out with his wife and see them. That really says a lot. Now you know why I love them so much!!!
