Fire Danger!

Hope everyone had a great 4th and hope no one set any unintentional fires. On a drought thread, we were talking about how dry it is here in sw Missouri and I said after a great April and May, we have only had one light shower in the month of June and now into July, so everything is really dry. Yesterday, a guy came to cut 40 acres that a guy gives me every year to keep the hay cut off and keep it trimmed. It was about chest high with johnsongrass, fescue, some brome and clover. His first round, something caused a spark and he saw smoke and put the fire out. He started again, another spark and he stopped and put the fire out. Third time, the fire took off and he never had a chance. The fire department got there real quick and they were able to keep the fire from getting the house and the barn, but in the end, they just had to circle the 40 acres and hold the perimeter and let it burn out, so it took care of the whole 40 acres. Guess I will hold off on brushogging the thistles until we get a shower of rain.

Oh, man, not dry here. We are in a monsoon cycle. Everyone is talking about the rain. It rained almost all night. We are not really getting high precipitation reading but (1.26 inches yesterday, probably another inch since midnight) it has rained almost everyday for the last 15 days. We got 4.66 inches in June. We are at about 22 inches on the year which is about normal except most of it has been late spring rain. I think being this wet this late we are going to be good for the year as far as drought

Red Bull, In the last week, I have driven to Cassville and on to Fayetteville and a trip to Harrison, and those areas look a little drier than we do, but I don't think there is alot of difference. The overall numbers around here can be a little misleading because the day in June that we got our light shower, 25 miles away, in Springfield, they got 10 inches. Also, they have gotten several rains northeast of Springfield, at my Uncle's house in Conway, over the month of June, so alot of the total rain numbers look real good. Hopefully, your area, and ours, will get some rain next week when the forecasters are giving us a good chance.
