Having only 5 head this time around to calve in the “spring” feels a lot different, but I reckon at least I’m still in the game.
These last two were born yesterday, I’d had them up in the barn during the ice storm and had turned them out day before yesterday after the ice melted. I’m glad they held off and were able to calve outside. Both cows 2nd generation home raised, I bought both of their grand dams as heifers.
The grand dam of the red cow was a Brahman x Hereford. She was a good cow, but had a bad udder and I culled her after 5 calves as I didn’t think a calf could nurse her anymore. Her daughter that was by a Hereford bull and the dam of this red cow, had a very similar udder and was culled about the same time.
This cow has a little bit better of an udder but it’s still not one that’s going to be feasible to last much past 6-7 calves. This is her 3rd. I won’t be retaining any further heifers from this line.
I have retained the BWF cow’s last years heifer.
Now we’ll have 6 more expected to calve late summer or fall, 5 cows and a first calf heifer.
