Well I finished my first calving season yesterday. I bought 10 bred older cows and 2 bred heifers last November. I had my first calf Christmas eve and my last on March 6th I sold 3 cows that were open made a few dollars on them, had one calf die during birth then the momma slipped down on ice a few days later and died, had one set of twins both doing fine one raised on bottle and the other on the cow, had 2 prolapses that I learned to put back in and I have one heifer that is still a week and a half later hell bent on kicking her calf to death, have to get her in the chute twice a day and let him nurse. So I ended up with 8 cows left and 9 calves if calf prices stay up I should make all of my money I spent on the cows back and then a little, only gave 700 for the cows and 600 for the heifers. I am happy for now and have learned a lot and I thank you all for the advice and words of wisdom when I did have proplems. I will see if I can take some pictures of the calves to post. Oh yeah I almost forgot 6 of my calves came in a 4 day stretch in early Jan. when the temp stayed below 20 in the day and down to 4 or 5 at night, had to get the twins in my truck to dry and warm them and had one more that was lifeless one morning and I got it in and warmed it by the fire all day and got it back to its momma that evening. The calf and cow that died was during this stretch also. Again thank you.

All that and yer in a break even or better. You should buy a lotto ticket. Of course the price of cattle helps a bunch doesn't it?

On the positive side you got exposed to as much or more in 90 days than some experience over many years. Hope you learned well and look forward to the next calving season. Good job.

Thanks I knew there would be a learning curve but this was a lot real fast. I am lucky to have some friends that are pretty experienced with cattle and don't mind to come and rope a prolapsed cow at 2 in the morning.

Daymon that black calf with the orange ear tag looks like a little meatwagon. I wouldn't mind 50 like him.

Yeah that black one is out of the other angus heifer I bought he is sure growing and is just 2 weeks old. They were bred to an angus bull. Thanks for the compliment
