I called the local dairy farmer across the street from me. I'm hoping to hear back from him w/ a position available. Who knows but I hope so.

From what I hear he has a big operation that extends to several locations. Supposidly there is only 2 hrs a day when hes not milkin' cows, its what I "heard" so, who knows.

I'm hoping he has something available for evenings or overnights. I realy want to get in there and see how things work and are set up and things. Ultimately I see myself w/ longhorn cattle for meat production but to be around the animals and work w/ them at all - I figure allot will transfer over. You know as far as handeling the animals and such. Anyway, I'm hopefull

:cboy:

Good luck finding a position. hope it works out well for you. Its great to see someone so enthusiastic (and to want to raise longhorns for meat production!!)!

Might as well get into raising hamsters for fur production too.

lol dun.

Are longhorns suitable for NY conditions.... the colder weather I mean. I think you will be disappointed in the meat production part of it with longhorns, may as well get holsteins and just feed them a little longer if you're not going to get meat producing beef cattle.

Good luck in your endeavors

The way I'm captalizing on the Longhorns is raising crossbred calves and selling butchered beef. I've been selling halves for $1.40/lb, but am going to increase that to $1.75/lb hanging weight. If you compare Longhorn beef with chicken and other beef it's way healthier for you and that's where the money's at. The Longhorn is a lot more efficient at feed conversion than other breeds which save money on feed. They are worth a look at if your interested in selling butchered beef.

Got a return call. man sd he has a position avail for his dirt business and he needs a superviser, or some one to run it anyway. But thats not what I'm Looking for. I make a livin already. Kinda hopin to get in w/ the animals. well he said he would call me early next week and set up a time to meat. I can probably take the Interview to let him know my interest and where they are. but i'm not real interested in the dirt bussiness at this point. so I'm not sure if he will have something available in the dairy side of things.

Don't totally rule out the supervisor/dirt work job. It could be one way to get your foot in the door...and it's another skill you could add. See what he's paying...and pick his brain about the dairy business. It's a tough life...

Yeah thats my thought. this is why I still agreed to set somthing up early next week w/ him. I dont need a full time job though. I got a wife and 3 kids so I dont have the time. I work fulltime now and cant give that up.
