Believe it or not I have never owned a 30/30 lever action. I have always felt that there were better tools for the job. I bought one today. A guy needing money sold me a mint Marlin 336 with a scope, sling and two boxes of Hornady ammo. Also included was a new 15ft buddy stand with seat pads and camo skirting. I got it all for $400.00. I've been playing with the little rifle and it is starting to grow on me. :cboy:

Got my 336 when I was 16 and I was hooked on lever action from then on. Got a 32 special and blr 3006

I used to have an 1894S in .44 mag. I should have never sold it. I may use this 30-30 late season just to get it bloodied a bit.
 
My first and only deer rifle has been a Marlin 30-30. Dad bought it for me when I was 12 from a pawn shop and I have used it each and every season and I'm now 32, therefore this season will be the 20th anniversary with it. My brother has one that is a nail driver one after another at 300 yards, have never seen one shoot as well as that one. Have been thinking now for a couple of seasons on buying another deer rifle but I'm stuck on that lever action, don't know how long it would take to get comfortable with anything else.
 
A 30-30 at 300 yds is a guess at best. Sighted dead on at 100 yds a 30-30 bullet will drop more than 2 feet at 300 yds. I have a couple of 30-30's and have shot a few deer with them, but never at more than 200yds. IMO 200yds. is to far for a 30-30.
 
I have a safe full of deer rifles and my old Leopold scoped 336 spends more time in the woods than all others combined. It is short, light, and it comes to my shoulder like a fine shotgun. A long shot for me is 100 yards, so it has more than enough range. I might use something else if it was more open, but here the little .30-30 fills the bill perfect.
 
A 336 30 30 was my dads first deer rifle when he was 8 years old in 1971. He sold it to a cousin about 25 years ago and we have been trying to buy it back for a couple years. Good guns.

I've got a 1894 44 mag also. Fun to hunt with.
 
Yeah my 30-30 don't hold a candle to my brother's, don't know why that one shoots as well as it does but it gets it done up to 300 yards consistently. Put it this way he won't ever be selling that gun. Mine isn't very good at a 100 yards, I like sticking to 75 yards and closer. Most of my hunting is in the woods and thickets therefore it gets the job done. I do have some grain fields and hay fields I hunt around some, that's why I'm been thinking on adding another deer rifle. I might try breaking in some type of bolt action, personally I've never have owned one or shot one. It has always been semi automatic, pumps, or lever actions around here.

Bolt action 30 06 would probably work well for you.
 
I have a Winchester model 64 in 30-30 that my Dad bought new in '38. Growing up I ate a lot of venison that was harvested with that gun. I shot my first deer with it in '63. I used it last year because it was the 50th anniversary of the first year I packed it.
