Not where you are
Last year and this year again we're splitting our fertilizer application 10-20-20 to 100lbs. in fall and 100lbs. in the early spring, with about 50lbs. of N in the spring to bring it up some. What do you do with fertilizer applications?

I split the applications. First application is early spring and the second application is after the second cutting of hay. I try to get all the potash out by July to prevent any winter injury to the grass.

I fertilize once a year after 1st cutting. Just because that is what I feel gives me the most bang for my buck. I am on pretty heavy ground myself, but I know people on sand that also fertilize after every cutting.

I will use commercial fert according to my test results mixed with a weed killer in the spring and normaly spread liter 2 more times during the year (pasture and hay fields) I can fert at a rate of 2 ton of liter per acre for only $20.00, at that price the return on the growth you get in your field makes it money well spent. I also rotate my cattle so they are never on a field right after I spread the liter, I want it to rain and wash into the grass before i put them on the field, I do the same with the liquid fert also.

The amount of times I fertilize is also driven by our rain fall or lack there of like it was this year.
