WHAT'S THE BEST TYPE & HEIGHT OF A FENCE ALONG A ROAD? ITS NOT A HIGH TRAFFIC ROAD BUT ITS DOES HAVE LIGHT TO MODERATE TRAFFIC ON IT. SHOULD I USE 5-6 STRAND BARBED WIRE? FIELD FENCE OR WOODED???? OR COMBO OF ?

Build a fence that is not going to fall down.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I've seen wooden fences, pipe fences, 4 strand, 5 strand, 6 strand, 8 strand barb wire fences, and single strand electric fence all on the same stretch of busy road. The only ones that cattle got out of were the ones that were not built and maintained properly.

SO WHAT'S THE BEST ONES I'M WORRIED ABOUT CATTLE GETTING LOOSE ON THE ROAD I'VE SEEN THE CRAPPIES FENCES TOO BUT I WANT ONE I CAN TRUST WHAT THE NORM.

I would think you would be fine with a 6 Strand barb wire fence. I see that a lot around here, even on major roads and highways. You could get fancy and use a cable or pipe fence, but i think the major thing is that it is built maintained properly.

Around here the standard is pretty much a 5 strand barbed. Back when materials were cheaper (1920s&30s), there were a lot of woven wire topped with 2 starnds of barbed.

On one section of the road (not a really busy road) we have 6 strands of barbed wire. Along another section is field fence with 2 strands of barbed on top of that.

In all these years we have not had a problem with either one. But, I do check fences after high winds, storms and at least once a month and make any necessary repairs at that time.

We use four strands Hi tensile all four electrified and never have a problem except for car and if you put a light on it to warn you if power goes out and bury a low voltage wire back to your house if possible then, you can have a buzzer or light to go off when voltage drops. Our place is narrow and very long so this works for us but, it may not be feasible for others.

We have a five strand barbed wire fence on most of our place that my Dad put up years and years ago. Where we've fenced along the road, we used six strands. Never have had any problem with cows getting out of either.

5 strands pulled tight with a 1.5 ton come-along or block and tackle hooked to the pickup until you break the wire. Splice broken spot and stretch back tight. You'll have all the stretch out of the wire and as good of a fence as you could want

We replaced a fence 3 years ago on the road front that was put in the 50's using locust post and 5 strands of barbwire. We put back up 5 strand with wood post every 100' and metal in between.

Somebody shot a made for TV movie dated to the 30's through the old fence before we replaced it. It was in poor condition but we run tame Lim's and they didn't seem to want out much.

I wouldn't want to be standing anywhere near where that wire might break. Bad advice.

I like four strands of high tensile. Up here a lot of snow shoved on it in the winter, barbed wire breaks and you have to rebuild it every spring. With high tensile if there is no cattle running against it in the winter just loosen the rachet and tighten up in the spring. If you have cattle running against it in the winter it will stand better than barbed.

Have used as little as 1 stand of temporary fence (17 ga) electricfied but replaced it with 4 strands of electrified hi-tensile. It takes jsut about any abuse & can bounce back - trees, limbs, cars, etc. Only had one calf get out that I know of while using the single strand of temporary wire (was tagged by a car but recovered just fine). None have escaped since going to the 4 strands of electricfied hi-tensile (about 4 yrs now).

Sounds like a accident waiting to happen. I have been sliced up pretty good by wire that snapped while stretching. Maybe you have figured out a way to prevent this.

That's why you get a teenager to do it, they heal faster

THANKS GUYS, I WAS THINKIN BOUT DOING WOODEN POSTS 8-10' APART & HEAVY ON THE CORNERS. AND GOING WITH FIELD FENCE & BARBED WIRE ALONG THE TOP. WITH ONE ELECTRIFIED WIRE ON THE INSIDE. NOT SURE ON THE TOTAL HEIGHT OF THE FENCE? ANG SUGGESTED THERE??? WHAT I HAVE IS BOUT A 300' WIDE (along the road) X 1500' DEEP. AND A LONG DRIVE WAY DOWN THE CENTER THAN ANOTHER 300' (along the road) X 1500' DEEP. I'M LUCKY THE 1500' SECTIONS ARE ALREADY DONE. he he THAN THE BACK SIDE IS BOUT ANOTHER 300' SECTION. JUST DON'Y WANT ANY MISHAPS THE GUY NEXT TO ME SEEM TO HAVE HIS YOUNGER CATTLE IN MY FIELDS QUITE A BIT. I DON'T WANT THAT. SO THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS .

Instead of using a come along, just buy a fence stretcher. They are inexpensive and that is what they are made for. They can be used on barbed, high tensil, and field fencing. Also used for splicing and tightening.

5 tight barbs with posts 15 ft apart will hold cattle. If there's a critter that will go through, take it to town ASAP. :)

I have about 5 miles of 4 lane frontage and I like to overkill. I put up 48" field fence with 1 Barb wire on the bottom and 3 on the top. I space the fence post at 10' and put a stretch corner at least every 300' or as needed. My motto is all steel b/c I do not want to go back and work on it. ever. My main problem is idiots wrecking and running through it. The way we strech our field fence is take 2 2by6 boards 54" long and drill 4 holes through them. Put them on opposite sides of the fence and bolt them together TIGHT and pull. As 4 barb wire I agree use a fence stretcher not a come-along. Also remember if u use cheap materials u wil get a cheap fence.
